Jorge Martin fractures his right hand and left foot following a high-speed crash during the first day of the official Sepang MotoGP Test 2025.
The incident happened on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, just two hours into the test session casting a shadow over the reigning MotoGP World Champion’s title defence for the upcoming 2025 MotoGP season.
Jorge Martin fractures also puts his participation for the remainder of Sepang MotoGP Test 2025 in serious doubt, further ruining his chances to adapt to the new RS-GP machine after he recently made the switch to Aprilia Racing following his maiden MotoGP title win with Pramac Racing in 2024.
The Spaniard had already suffered a minor crash earlier in the day at Turn 1 but was able to return to the track without major issues. However, the subsequent incident at Turn 2 proved to be far more severe resulting in Martin being violently thrown from his bike in a highside crash.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media depict Martin losing control of his Aprilia as he approached the left-hand Turn 2. The bike appeared to suddenly snap sideways launching the rider into the air before he landed heavily on the tarmac.
The impact was so heavy such that his helmet shattered upon hitting the ground, prompting immediate concern for his well-being.
Medical personnel swiftly attended to Martin at the scene and he was conscious throughout the ordeal though he was clearly in considerable pain.
He was initially taken to the circuit’s medical center for evaluation before being transferred to the Aurelius Hospital in Nilai located near the Sepang circuit for further examination and treatment.
Following a thorough assessment, doctors diagnosed Martin with a closed fracture of the 5th metacarpal head of his right hand and closed fractures of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th metatarsals of his left foot. CT scans and MRI scans were also conducted, which fortunately revealed no other injuries.
Aprilia Racing released an official statement confirming the extent of Jorge Martin fractures and outlining the next steps in his recovery.
“Jorge Martin suffered a closed fracture of the 5th metacarpal head of the right hand and a closed fracture of the 3rd, 4th and 5th metatarsals of the left foot,” the statement read.
“He has undergone a CT scan and MRI, both of which were negative for any other injuries. He will stay in hospital overnight and tomorrow he will fly back to Europe to undergo surgery on both his right hand and left foot.”
Martin is now set to return to Europe to undergo surgery on both his fractured hand and foot. The procedures aim to stabilize the fractures and facilitate the healing process, with the goal of getting him back on track as soon as possible.

However, the recovery timeline of Jorge Martin fractures remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether Martin will be fit to participate in the next pre-season test scheduled to take place at the Buriram International Circuit in Thailand on February 12-13.
The crash has undoubtedly disrupted Martin’s preparations for the 2025 MotoGP season, which is set to commence in March. As the reigning world champion, he was expected to be a major contender once again this year and his transition to the factory Aprilia team added further intrigue to his prospects.
Now, his focus will be on recovering from his injuries and regaining his fitness before the season gets underway.
Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola expressed his concern over the incident, stating that the cause of the crash was not immediately apparent.
“The crash [happened] for apparently no reason, with no mistake on this side and no mistake on the bike’s side,” Rivola said. “The tyres were in the right temperature and right pressure.
“We have no explanation. I just asked to know the history of the tyre [from Michelin].”
Rivola’s comments suggest that the team will be investigating the incident thoroughly to determine if any external factors such as a potential issue with the tires, may have contributed to the crash.
However, Martin’s accident was not the only injury setback to affect the Aprilia camp during Sepang MotoGP test 2025.
Trackhouse Racing’s Raul Fernandez was also forced to withdraw from the test after suffering a fractured metacarpal in his left hand in a separate incident. He will also undergo surgery in Barcelona to address his injury.
Additionally, VR46 Racing Team’s Fabio Di Giannantonio will require an operation after fracturing his left shoulder in a separate crash.
The spate of injuries has raised concerns about the safety of the Sepang circuit and the demands placed on riders during pre-season testing. While crashes are an inherent risk in MotoGP, the high number of incidents during this test has prompted discussions about potential measures to improve safety and reduce the likelihood of injuries.
As Jorge Martin begins his recovery process, the MotoGP community is united in wishing him a swift and full return to health. His absence from the track will be keenly felt, and his progress will be closely monitored in the weeks and months ahead.
