NASCAR recognized Ty Gibbs’ incredible debut season in 2023 Cup Series as the driver received a major award after Sunday’s season-ending race at Phoenix Raceway.
Gibbs has been honored by NASCAR as the Cup Series’ 2023 Sunoco Rookie of the Year after the sport made the announcement following this weekend’s season-ending event at Phoenix Raceway.
Gibbs adds this feat to an expanding list of accomplishments. He won the NASCAR Xfinity Series last year. This year, he was Joe Gibbs Racing’s full-time Cup Series driver, running the No. 54 car.
In his first Cup Series season behind the wheel, Gibbs battled for a postseason berth. He concluded the year strong with ten finishes inside the top-10 as well as four top-five finishes. Although Gibbs did not win any races, he did place fourth on the road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Throughout the 2023 season, Gibbs also led 112 laps and finished with five DNFs. Even though it was only his first year, the young driver’s future is exceptionally promising. Gibbs was expected to perform exceptionally after winning the 2022 Xfinity Series championship.
Such expectations will only continue to grow following his Rookie of the Year award.
