Theo Pourchaire opens up on Arrow McLaren's 'disgusting' dismissal

Pourchaire was “very surprised” by Arrow McLaren’s decision to dismiss him days after signing up

Theo Pourchaire was unexpectedly dismissed from the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team just days before the Laguna Seca race, a move he now admits was “disgusting” and left him “very surprised.”

Pourchaire’s journey with McLaren began positively, as his impressive performance at the Grand Prix of Long Beach earned him a one-time appearance and his skills soon became evident, leading to a multi-year contract for the remainder of the 2024 season.

However, the promising turn of events took an abrupt and disappointing downturn in mid-June as the reigning Formula 2 champion was informed that his services were no longer required, and he was replaced by American racer Nolan Siegel. This decision marked the sixth driver rotation for McLaren’s #6 entry within a year.

The 20-year old expressed his shock and disappointment, stating that he was “very surprised” and “didn’t understand” the decision.

“To be 100 per cent transparent, McLaren had signed me to a multi-year contract to drive with them in IndyCar,” Pourchaire said in an interview with Auto-Hebdo.

“And then, on the Tuesday morning before Laguna Seca, I learned from my manager that they had decided not to have me drive at Laguna Seca, as well as for the rest of the season.

“At first, I was very surprised, I didn’t understand, I thought it was fake. We had only signed a few weeks before. I was disgusted.”

The young Frenchman also revealed that the extent of his conversation with the team was a mere one-minute phone call, during which he was not provided with any specific reasons for his dismissal.

“The team ended up calling me for a minute, around 11am that same day, the day before my planned departure for Laguna Seca, to tell me that I was excluded from the program,” he added. “They didn’t give me the specific reasons.”

Pourchaire’s dismissal is puzzling given his impressive performance and achievements. As the reigning Formula 2 champion, Pourchaire was widely regarded as a rising star in the motorsport world, and his transition to IndyCar was seen as a natural progression.

Despite the limited time he had to adapt, Pourchaire managed to secure a respectable 21st place in the championship standings, only 25 points behind Linus Lundqvist, a front-runner for the Rookie of the Year title. This performance demonstrated Pourchaire’s ability to quickly adapt to new challenges.

The decision to replace Pourchaire with the relatively inexperienced Nolan Siegel has been met with widespread criticism and confusion. While Siegel has shown promise in the Indy NXT series, his resume pales in comparison to Pourchaire’s achievements.

The team’s sporting director, Tony Kanaan, attempted to provide some context for the decision, citing the team’s need for “continuity” and the challenges they have faced in managing multiple driver changes. However, his comments did little to alleviate the concerns surrounding the decision.

“It started back last year with that driver [Palou] that decided not to come over and breach his contract,” Kanaan said as quoted by Motorsport.com.

“Then we decided on continuity, and it’s been quite a few six months for me. I did not sign up to have to choose four drivers. And then every option we had, because we had to make a decision quick, a lot of them had schedules already.

“I just told the guys out there, ‘You change race cars all the time. You come in, you make a change.’ Not that we want to do that with drivers, but we’re here. I’m in this to win races. That’s all I care [about]. And then I think eventually we look for continuity.

“He [Pourchaire] didn’t do anything wrong, it was just a situation. It was a call that we had to make. It wasn’t personal. It wasn’t because of his performance.

“He’s done whatever he could do. He wasn’t happy, but he understood.”

The dismissal of Pourchaire from the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team has significant implications for his career. Having given up his opportunity in Super Formula, he now finds himself without a seat for the remainder of the season.

However, the controversy surrounding his dismissal has paradoxically bolstered Pourchaire’s market value, with reports suggesting that several high-profile teams have already expressed interest in the Frenchman. This could potentially open up new opportunities for the young talent, who remains committed to pursue a career in IndyCar.
