The Thailand Grand Prix has been confirmed as the MotoGP season opener for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns.
The MotoGP championship is set to undergo a significant transformation for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, as the Thailand Grand Prix at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram will replace the traditional Qatar GP as the season opener.
Buriram, which was previously scheduled towards the end of the campaign along with the majority of races in Asia and Oceania, has been given a new date from February 28 through March 02 next season.
This strategic shift highlights the growing importance of Southeast Asia within the MotoGP framework, reflecting both the region’s passionate fanbase and its significance to manufacturers and partners in the sport.
The season-opening race has traditionally taken place in Qatar for the most of the past 20 years, but in recent months, there has been much conjecture that the race would be moved to a later date – yet to be announced – in order to steer clear of the holy month of Ramadan.
“We are very excited to reveal that the 2025 and 2026 season openers will be the Thailand Grand Prix at Buriram,” Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports said. “Southeast Asia is one of our most important markets, both for the sport and for our factories and partners.
“Thailand plays a leading role in that, and the passion is clear to see in the huge crowds we enjoy at Buriram year on year. We know they will create an incredible atmosphere for the first event of the season.
“As soon as Buriram joined the calendar, it became an instant favourite. It’s easy to understand why: it’s a fantastic place to enjoy MotoGP, with a layout crafted to showcase the best of our close racing – very much proven by the incredible show we enjoyed at the track last season.
“We’re looking forward to coming back later this year and then to return in 2025 for a history-making season opener.”
Since its introduction to the MotoGP calendar in 2018, the Thailand Grand Prix has quickly established itself as a fan favorite, drawing in over 200,000 spectators annually. The vibrant atmosphere created by the passionate Thai fans has made Buriram a key destination for the championship.
“We recognize the numerous benefits of being the season opener,” said Dr. Gongsak Yodmani, Governor for Sports Authority of Thailand. “This presents a significant opportunity to leverage a world-class sporting event to stimulate the economy and generate substantial revenue in line with the Sport Tourism policy.
“One of the factors that will make the 2025 season particularly exciting is the significant rider movement between teams.
“This will undoubtedly captivate MotoGP fans worldwide as they eagerly anticipate seeing top riders on their new bikes for the first time at Chang International Circuit. Following a nearly four-month off-season, this will be the inaugural race to showcase the new team dynamics.
“Moreover, Dorna Sports, as the event organizer, has plans to extensively promote the season opener to raise awareness among motorsport fans globally. This will enhance the visibility of the Thai round and establish it as a must-visit destination for MotoGP enthusiasts from around the world.

The full 2025 MotoGP calendar yet to be released as the sport travels to MotorLand Aragón for its 12th round of the season from 30th August to 1st September.
