It has been officially confirmed that current Suzuki rider Alex Rins will join LCR Honda at the end of this season after signing a two-year contract.
Suzuki has confirmed officially that it is in “discussions” with MotoGP organisers Dorna about exiting the championship at the end of this season, citing the “economic situation” as justification.
While neither the lack of results in 2021 nor the lack of a satellite team are likely to have triggered this week’s shock news, it’s easy to imagine that if Brivio had stayed, things might have turned out differently if he had been able to exert his considerable influence over the head office in Japan.
Of course, it’ll always be one of MotoGP’s great what-if questions; one we’ll never know the answer to – but it’s a terrible shame that Brivio’s dream squad will now be broken apart in one way or another.
MotoGP promoter Dorna says it has reminded the Suzuki MotoGP team of its contractual duties following its unofficial decision to withdraw from the MotoGP grid at the end of the 2022 season.
Despite winning the riders’ championship in 2020 and having a great position in the current season, there are reports in Europe that Suzuki is set to exit MotoGP again.
