Red Bull Racing has filed a formal protest to the FIA regarding the design of McLaren brake ducts, alleging that the Woking-based team has created an extra cooling hole in violation of the sport’s technical regulations.

The protest, which was first reported by German publication Auto Motor und Sport, has sparked a new chapter in the ongoing battle between the two teams. According to the regulations, teams are permitted to install sensors in the brake ducts during free practice on Friday to collect data, but these holes must be covered for qualifying and the race on Saturday and Sunday.

However, Red Bull claims that at some races, McLaren brake ducts remained open during the actual sessions, which is not allowed. The FIA has since inspected the cars and found that the team had taped off the holes in Austria and Britain.

It remains unclear whether McLaren took this action after Red Bull’s protest or the FIA’s checks.

Red Bull’s suspicion was aroused by Lando Norris’ impressive tire management in recent races, particularly in Miami, Imola, and Spain, where the young British driver was able to manage his tires better than Max Verstappen. Therefore, the team believes that the information from the holes and sensors could have given their rivals an advantage in tire wear.

The outcome of Red Bull’s protest could have significant implications for both teams.
