After a positive COVID-19 test raised questions about who would take over as race director for this weekend’s first Miami Grand Prix, Niels Wittich is back after recovery.
On Wednesday, the German sent an usual message to all teams and officials, and an FIA spokeswoman confirmed his attendance for the weekend.
After the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Italy’s Imola track, Wittich and colleague Eduardo Freitas tested positive for COVID-19, according to media reports.
Following a review of last year’s controversial season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, Freitas and Wittich were named as alternating replacements for now-departed Australian Michael Masi in February.
The first four races of the season were directed by Wittich in conjuction with his colleague Freitas.
Regardless of immunisation status, travel to the United States from Europe requires a negative test done no more than one day before departure.
The FIA has not made any comments on the subject, except to clarify that medical information about its employees cannot be released “unless it is important to the running of an event.”
