Porsche reveals new liveries for 2020 Le Mans

Porsche has revealed the new pair of liveries for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race that will be happening this weekend. The colour schemes celebrate the Weissach marque’s 1970 Le Mans win with the Porsche 917 driven by Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann back then. Porsche’s No.91 car will share the same red and white colours as used by Attwood and Herrmann that year, while the No.92 machine will run a variant with black sections in place of red. The two Manthey-run Porsche 911 RSR-19s will be driven by the same drivers for a third year in a row, with Gianmaria Bruni, Richard Lietz and Frederic Makowiecki aboard the No.91 car and Laurens Vanthoor, Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen sharing the No.92. Porsche is running only two cars in the GTE Pro ranks for the first time since 2017 owing to the withdrawal of its two CORE autosport-operated IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship cars due to the global coronavirus pandemic. They face opposition from two-car entries from regular FIA World Endurance Championship rivals Ferrari and Aston Martin, as well as two privateer Ferraris entered by the Risi Competizione and Scuderia Corsa teams. It is also the first time the 911 RSR-19, which replaced the previous-generation 911 RSR at the start of the 2019/20 WEC season, will be raced at Le Mans. “We’re competing under completely different circumstances,” commented Porsche’s head of WEC operations Alexander Stehlig. “The climatic conditions in September are different compared to June. “There are still some unknowns in terms of weather, temperatures, performance and tyres. We’ll use the existing data from our WEC and IMSA campaigns as well as the insights gained from testing so that we can hopefully be well sorted for the first free practice session. “We’re competing for the first time with the Porsche 911 RSR-19 here. It’s not only new for us, but also for the ACO, which handles the BoP. We have complete confidence in the expertise and experience of the specialists. “Remaining unchanged, however, are the two driver trios in the cockpits. This will be their third year of working together at Le Mans. That’s a strength we will build on.”

Honda: Verstappen engine issue ‘not small’

Honda admits that Max Verstappen’s engine failure at the start of the Tuscan Grand Prix was ‘not small’ and the biggest impact that saw him pull out of the race was ‘a very bad situation’ after Verstappen had a good launch at the start of the race and later on lost power and fell back to the midfield by the first turn. He turned onto his rear around the first turn Chicane as 3 cars followed the RB16 and later slid off to the gravel as he ranted over the radio. The Red Bull driver was well aware that he would be retiring from the race due to the technical problem as Honda F1 technical director Toyoharu Tanabe said the peroblem occured because something went wrong in the formation lap and then escalated itself in a very bad way at the start of the race at Mugello. This was not new to Verstappen as he had also retired from the race a week earlier during the Italian Grand Prix, but his suggestion was that a completely different caused the Mugello race retire. “We’re now investigating the cause of the issue,” Toyoharu Tanabe said. “At the moment I cannot tell you if we could continue, or we had to retire, But the issue is not small. The impact was big. So, it was a very bad situation.” Honda will be conducting the physical examination of the RB16 engine itself while the R&D department in Sakura Japan will be analysing the race statistics. Tanabe also added that they have not put a plan to recorrect the problem as they have to first assess the cause and the damage that has been done. Verstappen’s car has spare engine components to switch to if Honda resolves to introduce another engine for the next race in Russia he will not be incurring a grid penalty. A second race retirement has been slowing Verstappen’s top 3 lead in the drivers’ standings but however Redbull continued to show its dominance in the podium streaks. Alexander albon in the sister RB16 was able to finish third in the Mugello race, being his maiden podium finish. This shows the Honda-powered car is still strong as the car has achieved top three finishes in the 2020 season apart from the season opener.

Lewis Hamilton defends Valtteri Bottas on Mugello race restart crashes

Lewis Hamilton stands up for his teammate Valtteri Bottas who was the race leader after the race restart which caused multi-car crashes. Nicolas Latifi, Kevin Magnussen, Antonio Giovinazzi and Carlos Sainz are among the drivers who crashed on the race race restart and could be heard complaing about Bottas who was the race leader at the moment. Sebastian Vettel also went ahead to complain about the Bottas move being the main cause of the accident on the track. “It is simply unnecessary. As the leader, you have to be aware of such things,” Vettel said.  “If you want to wait, you should wait a long time and then step on the gas, but don’t stop and go… If you want to wait, you should wait a long time and then step on the gas, but don’t stop and go.” Lewis Hamilton came to Bottas’ defence saying FIA was the one to blame as he said, “It is absolutely not Valtteri’s fault. It is the policymakers, they are clearly trying to make things more exciting, but today you have seen that that puts people in danger. Maybe they should reconsider that rule.” “They turned off the safety car lights later and later. We are fighting for positions. Especially when you deserve that position, like Valtteri deserved to be in the lead,” the six-time world champion concluded.

Race stewards issue warning to 12 drivers after race restart crashes

Over half of the grid has been issued with warnings over their actions during the race restart in the Tuscan Grand prix after there were multiple crashes involving several cars. Carlos Sainz, Nicolas Latifi, Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Giovinazzi were all involved inthe crash as there were preparations for race restart, the four drivers retired from the race as the stewards called upon Magnussen, Latifi and Daniil Kvyat to help them in understanding the situation. The stewards came up with an official warning to 12 drivers after analysing the incident. The twelve drivers were: Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, George Russell, Antonio Giovinazzi, Carlos Sainz, Kevin Magnussen, Daniil Kvyat, Nicolas Latifi, Alexander Albon and Lance Stroll. “The Stewards conclude that the root cause of this incident was the inconsistent application of throttle and brake, from the final corner along the pit straight, by the above drivers,” read a statement.” “The Stewards acknowledge the challenges the location of the Control Line presents at this circuit and the desire of drivers to take advantage of the restart.” “However this incident demonstrates the need for caution to be exercised in the restart situation and note that there was an extreme concertina effect which dramatically increased as it moved down the field. We also note that some drivers might have avoided being involved in the incident had they not followed directly behind the car in front.” “By doing so they effectively blocked off all visibility of what was happening immediately in front of the preceding car.” “A warning has been imposed as it is the view of the Stewards that no one driver was wholly or predominantly to blame.” Valtteri Bottas, who was leading the race as the crash happened, was cleared of any wrongdoing. “It was further noted that the driver of Car 77 (Valtteri Bottas) and the other drivers involved in the restart not mentioned above, complied with the regulations,” they confirmed. “Car 77 had the right under the regulations to dictate the pace.”

Lewis Hamilton wins ‘crash-filled’ Tuscan F1 Grand Prix

Lewis extended his lead in winning the seventh Formula 1 championship after winning the Tuscan Grand Prix which was rather hectic and filled with crashes at Misano as the race was interrupted by two red flags and three safety car. Hamilton went ahead to lead a 1-2 Mercedes lead followed by Valtteri Bottas as Redbull’s Alexander Albon finnished third being his maiden podium finish in a race that saw 8 cars off the track. The Mercedes racer was able to take back the race leadership from his teammate Bottas following the first red-flag session and continued on to dominate in his race wins, he will be leading in the F1’s Drivers Championship with 55 points after picking the bonus point for the fastest lap. This comes as there are only 8 races remaining in the 2020 Formula 1 season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc moved up to third as Max Verstappen reported a lack of power as the race cars approached turn 1, but Verstappen lasted only one more turn as AlfaRomeo’s Kimi Raikkonen hit him from the back sending the Redbull RB16 car to the gravel and out of the race. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly was also a victim as Kimi Raikkonen as they clashed on turn two just prior with the contact with Verstappen, putting the AlphaTauri driver out of the race. This resulted to the deployment of the safety car as also Romain Grosjean were involved in the contact but were able to progress with the race. As the cars were cleared, the safety car was called in at the end of lap 6, only to be called in again later following a series of crashes on the pit straight as Bottas tried to slow the following F1 cars which caused many of the drivers misjudging on when to accelerate. The error caused Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi to ram into Kevin Magnussen’s rear. The series of crash also caught up with Mclaren’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Nicolas Latiffi forcing all the four cars out of the race. A red flag was out following the crash and later a 25-minute wait to resume the race on lap 10, the race resumed from a standing start on the grid with only 13 cars on the line-up after Renault’s Esteban Ocon pulling out of the race due to a brake issue. Hamilton’s W11 was also smoking at the race restart but was able to take on his teammate Bottas around turn one and take the lead. Charle’s Leclerc was able to maintain third position but soon faced pressure from the other cars as he was slower on the straights. Later on he was overtaken by Lance stroll, and later on lose places to Daniel Ricciardo, Alexander Albon and Sergio Perez to end up seventh and later pit for a set of hard tyres. Bottas was able to hold steadily to the gap with his teammate Hamilton, but the gap increased following the wear on his front tyres. The finn went ahead to pit at the end of lap 31 to change his tyres in a bid to close the gap between him and the sister W11. Hamilton also headed to the pit one lap later to also change into hard tyres and was able to exit with a gap of 6 seconds as the race leader. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo was able to beat Lance stroll after pitting at the end of lap 27 and Racing point tried to beat him later after three laps but the Renault proved to be unbeatable also taking Redbull’s Alex Albon to take the 3rd position. Albon dropped to fifth. The Mercedes drivers were warned to keep off the kerbs and look after their tyres but five laps later a safety car was deployed after Lance Stroll’s RP20 crashed at turn 9, going into the tyre barrier after it slid off the kerb. The car was left nwith heavy damage but Stroll was able to get out and walk away from the wreck. The safety car was again deployed as the drivers took the opportunity to pit and Hamilton was able to still hold his lead aver Bottas who came in one lap later. But the race was again red-flagged for the second time on lap 45 for the tyre barriers to be re-installed around turn 9 with only 12 cars remaining in the race. Alexander Albon was able to close up on Daniel Ricciardo two laps later to take 3rd and also tried to catch up on Bottas as the race concluded. The Mercedes driver crossed the line 2nd as Albon maintained the 3rd position. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo finished 4th which was just shy of winning his bet with his boss Cyril Abiteboul. Perez finished fifth for the Racing point after a long battle with Mclaren’s Lando Norris who was sixth. Daniil Kvyat recorded his best for the season by coming in 7th place followed by Charles Leclerc in 8th finishing the 1000th race for Ferrari. Raikkonen finished 9th after receiving a five-second time penalty for crossing the white line at pit entry . San Marino MotoGP: Morbidelli bags maiden win as Quartararo retires

Franco Morbidelli came to win the Misano Grand Prix to claim his first MotoGP victory while his Petronas Yamaha teammate, Fabio Quartararo retired from the race after crashing twice. It was a dramatic race as Franco Morbidelli started second on the grid as he went ahead to lead Yamaha Factory team’s Valentino Rossi through the first corner. The pole-sitter Maverick Vinales resulted to third and Quartararo fifth as the race progressed. Morbidelli’s win was unexpected in the 6th stage of the 2020 MotoGP season with the season becoming more unpredictable, Morbidelli being the fourth first-time winner to win in 2020 season alone. However the performance by the rider was superb throught the race. ndeed, Fabio Quartararo and  Maverick Vinales the only rider to start on a hard rear tyre – fluffed their chances at the start when they allowed Ducati’s Jack Miller between themselves and Morbidelli, plus Valentino Rossi out front. With Vinales taking time to get his tyres up to performance, Quartararo became bottled up behind him initially but having finally passed his stablemate on seven, dropped his Petronas SRT Yamaha when he ran wide at Turn 4. The crestfallen Frenchman soon pitted and returned to track, only to fall again almost straight away on cold tyres on a veritable day to forget for the title contender. Up front, Rossi tracked Morbidelli during the initial laps, but a new lap record from the 2017 Moto2 champion allowed him to put the air he needed to start pushing on. By contrast, Rossi found himself being swallowed by Alex Rins and Pecco Bagnaia behind, the pair having relieved Vinales earlier before quickly catching and dispatching a fading Miller ahead of them.  However, a steely Rossi wouldn’t give up second place without a fight, the fairly evenly matched Yamaha and Suzuki riders line astern but never looking that likely to swap positions. As such, Bagnaia – in his first race back since breaking his leg at Brno – would wait no longer as he streamed up the inside of Rins at the fast Turn 11 to move into third with eight laps remaining. Unlike the more hesitant Rins, Bagnaia wasted no time in getting the better of Rossi – his VR46 rider academy mentor – repeating the same move at Turn 11 on the very next lap to nose the Pramac Racing Ducati into second position. Their feuding would allow Morbidelli – at times 3secs clear of the pack – the opportunity to ease off in the closing stages, crossing the line to take an emotional maiden victory in his third season of MotoGP competition.  He joins team-mate Quartararo,Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira in notching up maiden wins in just the six races of the 2020 MotoGP season alone. Behind them, Bagnaia visibly faded as fatigue no doubt set in but did just enough to collect second place for his first MotoGP podium, in so doing likely guaranteeing his promotion to the factory Ducati team in 2021. Just adrift of him on the line though was a brilliant Joan Mir, who after losing time trying to overtake Miller, managed to catch the podium-contesting group before planting a superb pass on Rins into the first corner of the final lap. With momentum on his side, Mir did was Rins couldn’t by slicing up the inside of Rossi at Turn 5 in one of the moves of the season to snatch a brilliant third place. As a result, Rossi had to make do with fourth, just denied the chance of a 200th grand prix podium at his home race. Rins was left fifth, no doubt frustrated at not taking his opportunities, while a perplexed Vinales was left down in sixth, his hard tyre only coming into strength late on as he set his fastest time in the closing laps. With Quartararo down and out, bizarrely it means Andrea Dovizioso is the new 2020 MotoGP World Championship leader despite barely featuring in the race and finishing well down in seventh but notching up useful points towards what is becoming an unconventional title bid. Takaaki Nakagami maintained his record as the only rider to finish every race this season inside the top ten with a charging ride from 14th to eighth, getting the better of a fading Miller in ninth and Pol Espargaro, the best KTM in tenth. Fellow KTM riders Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder trailed in 11th and 12th, while Aleix Espargaro, Iker Lecuona and Johann Zarco completed the points’ paying positions.

Ineos makes £700m bid to buy Mercedes F1 team

Ineos could be moving from team sponsor to team owner with reports saying that the company is close to signing £700 million deal to buy the Mercedes Formula 1 team. It was earlier this year that Ineos, which is the world’s largest chemical producer signed a five-year sponsorship deal with Mercedes, but at that time Ineos boss Jim Ratcliffe and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff preferred to call it a ‘partnership’ and not a sponsorship in the deal that involved £110 million. Now all this seems like it was just a lead that Ineos was making in buying the Formula 1 team. Ineos will be buying out 70% of the shares in the German Formula 1 team which is on the high road in winning the seventh consecutive Formula 1 championship. “The ownership of the team is going to be taken over by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos,” Jordan told the British tabloid. “The Ineos name is already on the side of the car anyway and they have this technological partnership so this is a nice way out for Mercedes.” Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan said. “The team will be called Ineos but it will still be run from the factory in Brackley and Mercedes will retain a 30 per cent share in it…It will not be known as Mercedes any more and Toto Wolff, the team principal, will no longer be in charge.” “It has become difficult for them. How can they keep winning? How can they improve on what they have already done? They can’t.” Jordan added. “Toto’s reputation as one of the great team leaders in the history of the sport is already secure. What he has achieved at Mercedes puts him in the same league as Ron Dennis at McLaren and Jean Todt at Ferrari but all good things come to an end.” Rumours had been going around for months that Mercedes was considering letting go of its Formula 1 team as the rumors still claimed that the parent company, Daimler with its success in the F1 the company feels it has nothing more to achieve in Formula 1. Mercedes has been denying the rumors and insisted it was sticking around. Before the beginning of the 2020 F1 season the team statement once read,” “our clear intention to continue competing in Formula 1 as a Mercedes-Benz works team in the years to come, and to do so with our managing partner, Toto Wolff.” The team has also signed the 2021-2025 F1 Concorde Agreement but this does not guarantee the team will be running under current ownership.

Christian Horner admits at looking other driver options

Red Bull’s boss and team principal Christian Horner said he was looking at other driver options for the team’s driver line-up for the 2021 Formula 1 season. Max Verstappen is the leading driver who is firmly under contract with the team as he continues to impress with pure talent on the track, on the other hand his teammate Alexander Albon has been struggling to keep up with the ‘flying dutchman’ although he managed to get the fourth pole behind his teammate in Saturday’s qualifying session. “We know that he is quick when everything goes normally,” said Dr Helmut Marko, the architect of Red Bull’s driver program. “I hope that all of the talk will finally be quiet now. As long as Alex continues to develop and he meets our expectations, he is our candidate.” The same scenario happened to Pierre Gasly last season as he was dropped from Red Bull Racing team back to the junior team AlphaTauri after being unable to match up to Max Verstappen. The talks will continue going on as there are strong drivers such as Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in the driver market and Dr Helmut Marko insisted that Alexander Albon was still their candidate as he continued to develop and meet the team’s expectations. “There are a couple of strong drivers on the market… Nico Hulkenberg too.” Christian Horner said “But our priority is Alex,” he insisted. “It’s part of my job to know what other options are available, but we are determined to support Alex in realising his potential.” As for the practice at Mugello circuit Verstappen was happy to shave off a few tenths of a second within the leading Mercedes W11 after the ‘party mode’ was banned. “In the end, Mercedes turned up the power in qualifying but it was nowhere near as blatant as when the party mode was available,” said Marko. “I expect it to be a lot closer in the race. We should definitely have a chance.”

Valentino Rossi gave his limited number of fans allowed to attend the Misano MotoGP a reason to celebrate as he topped the third free practice of the San Marino MotoGP. Grant enfinger takes Richmond’s trucks win over Crafton

Grant enfinger passed Matt Crafton with only seven out of the two hundred and fifty laps remaining which earned him his third victory in the Nascar Truck series regular at Richmond Raceway. Enfinger made a comeback from an incident he had experienced in the early sections of the last stage after his truck developed a tyre rub forcing him to pit following contact with his ThorSport teammate Ben Rhodes. Grant Enfinger got back on the lead-lap and gradually worked his way back to the top, eventually passing teammate Crafton with only seven laps to go, closing the regular season the same way he began it in Victory Lane. This is his fifth career victory. Matt Crafton came in second and Rhodes third making it a 1-2-3 win for ThorSport Racing. Brett Moffitt finished fourth and GMS Racing Tyler Ankrum rounded up the top five spots for the race. “Man, definitely a special night for us…It’s been a rough couple months. Even though we got the year started off pretty good, it’s been a rough couple months. We catch a little flack every now and then but we had three F-150s at ThorSport Racing that could have won the race tonight and I’m proud of that.” Enfinger said. “Matt seemed like he wanted to run the bottom but we ran the center really good. That was our advantage on the long run. We’ve been beating our heads against the wall lately but I feel like we’re going into the playoffs with some momentum.” Following a break between stage two and three, many trucks headed for the pits but Ben Rhodes in the No.99 ThorSport truck remained on the track and in the lead even after the race restart on lap 153, Enfinger managed to grab back the lead after the restart but a lap later Rhodes reclaimed the lead. This move made Enfinger’s No.98 Ford get a tyre rub. Austin Wayne got himself spinning on turn one in an incident that also got ThorSport Racing’s Johny Sauter bringing out the caution as the drivers elected to pit. Moffitt went four-wide in Turns 1 and 2 on the restart to go from 12th to fourth in one lap. On Lap 187, he got around Rhodes to take the lead for the first time in the race. On Lap 196, Crafton managed to move into the runner-up spot, less than a second behind Moffitt but Crafton finally ran down and passed Moffitt for the lead on Lap 219.With 15 laps remaining in the race, Crafton had built a 1.7-second lead over Grant Enfinger with Moffitt in third.Enfinger closed to Crafton’s rear bumper with 10 laps to go, hoping to challenge him one final time for the lead. The chief executive of the Ginetta Company which is under The LNT Group, Matte Lowe said, “ “Team LNT with its Ginetta-AER G60-LT-P1 will not be contesting the 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours… New COVID cases in France are at their highest level since the start of the pandemic and with the latest quarantine rules in place when returning, as a factory-based team, this will in effect mean a minimum four-week closure of the Ginetta manufacturing facility, with a knock-on effect on Ginetta’s core UK championships.” “This, coupled with the significantly altered WEC calendar, has meant that after careful consideration, the decision has been taken that the G60-LT-P1 will not contest this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.” The executive added. The car was due to be driven by Guy Smith who is the 2003 Le Mans champion, Chris Dyson who was Smith’s partner in the American Le Mans and works driver Mike Simpson. This leaves only five cars in the LMP1 class being the Toyota TS050 Hybrid Pair, two Rebellion-Gibson R13s and one ByKolles ENSO CLM-Gibson P1/01. Ginetta boss Lawrence Tomlinson stated that they were also not ready in the new WEC series set on November in Bahrain. The outfit has not been competing in WEC since last November when its two entries participated in the Bahrain WEC, the team also missed on the February Austrian fixture and last month’s 6 hours of Spa. The team boss stated that they needed to return the cars to UK for rebuilding for missing Austin and also pre-testing a series of upgrades on the G60 LMP1 over competing at Spa. The team had also narrowed down to one car because they didn’t want to produce necessary spares for two in case a race postponed from June didn’t happen. “The factory will instead focus on testing and refining the cars in preparation for the 2021 season.” Lowe added on a statement from LNT. The team have no further plans to bring the Ginetta for the next season but according to Tomlinson they are hopeful that another team will take over the cars and hence the car will be on the grandfathered basis since there will be introduction of Le Mans Hypercar rules.

Alpine to enter WEC 2021 LMP1 rebranded as Rebellion

Signatech Alpine will be moving to the pinnacle of endurance racing for the 2021 World Endurance Championship as they will enter the series rebranded as Rebellion R-13. This move was reported on Thursday and the news follow closely the announcement of Renault Formula 1 rebranding its name to Alpine for 2021 season, however an official announcement is expected on Monday. It is alleged that the signatech team will be operating one of the three R-13 chassis on loan from Oreca which currently owns the car and it is expected that it will be rebranded in the same way as Oreca 07 LMP2 car known as Alpine A-470. Rebellion Racing had confirmed earlier this year that they would be dropping out of endurance racing after the end of 2019/2020 World Endurance Season but according to sources the team confirmed that it has no plans to sell or loaning out the two Oreca-Gibsons cars that remain under their ownership. The current Signatech LMP2 drivers Andre Negrao and Nathanael Berthon who will be driving for Rebellion in the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours, have been reported to be the contenders for the new drive. This comes as Thomas Laurent who was with Rebellion in 2018/2019 season and now currenltly with Signatech might also be considered for the ride. Signatech will be moving to the LMP1 class which has only attracted Toyota, Bykolles and Glickenhaus although there was the introduction of LMH(Le Mans Hypercar) which may leave Signatech to be the only current-gen Lmp1 on the grid unless Ginetta is able to find a customer willing to continue operating its G60-LT-P1 beyond the end of this season. It also raises the prospect of Alpine gearing up to commit to either the LMH formula or the LMDh ruleset that the WEC will share with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, which was originally planned to come on stream in 2022 but could be delayed by a year. In such a scenario, Alpine would face off against fellow French marque Peugeot when the latter joins the WEC field with a new hybrid-powered contender some time in 2022.

Quartararo leads San Marino GP F2 as KTM and Yamaha dominate top 10

Fabio Quartararo topped San Marino GP FP2 at Misano ending the Friday session as the best overall as Yamaha and KTM filled eight of the top nine positions in the practice session. Quartararo led a 1-2 Petronas Yamaha as his teammate Franco Morbidelli came in second by a tenth of a second . The frenchman had an impressive 45-minute long session as he improved on his own lap times but all eyes were on the Yamaha Factory rider Maverick Vinales who was the FP1 pace setter and the duel was on for the top spot. The battle was hot between the two racers as they traded places in the beginning of the session but Team Ecstar Suzuki rider Joan Mir stopped the party as he took P1 on his Suzuki machine recording a time of 1m33.236s just 0.134 seconds faster than Quartararo. Mir’s teammate at Suzuki Ecstar also did an impressive job after he snatched the leadrship from Mir by recording a lap time of 1m33.015s giving him a two tenths of a second from his teammate. Brand Binder who is the Czech GP was the fastest but as his session was coming to a close he crashed around turn 6 after sliding onto the gravel on his KTM, this ended his session as he did not get back to the track. It was an encouraging session for both Yamaha and KTM as their four-strong each armada proved difficult to penetrate in FP2, with Pol Espargaro going third quickest on the factory RC16, but only just ahead of the impressive Iker Lecuona on the sister Tech 3 bike, the Spaniard consistently bouncing towards the top of the timesheets during the session before ending up in fourth. Franco Morbidelli put a time of 1m32.367s as Local hero Valentino Rossi completed the top five on the second factory Yamaha, Vinales ultimately slipping to sixth behind his team-mate as the session came to a close. Danilo Petrucci saved some honour for his official Ducati squad with the seventh quickest effort, while Binder fell to eighth ahead of Austrian GP victor Miguel Oliveira. Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten for Aprilia, the Spaniard inching ahead of Andrea Dovizioso by just 0.009.
