Magnussen to join Chip Ganassi in IMSA for 2021

Haas Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen is set for a switch to sportscar racing in 2021, driving for Chip Ganassi Racing’s revived IMSA team. The 28-year-old Dane will be one of the full-time drivers in Ganassi’s single Cadillac DPi-V.R entry in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, a program confirmed last week. Magnussen’s future has been the subject of much speculation since he announced his departure from the Haas F1 team last month and his father Jan Magnussen, the former sportscar ace who manages his son’s career, advised him to seek opportunities within IndyCar and WEC. However, with WEC set for a ‘transition year’ as the first Hypercars are introduced, Magnussen was unlikely to find a particularly appealing opportunity on the European sportscar scene. Meanwhile, although it’s understood that he approached all but one of the IndyCar teams that still had a seat available in October, most owners were seeking a driver who could bring money. That left Magnussen without an obvious option since his personal sponsor Jack & Jones – a Danish clothing company – has a negligible footprint in the USA, and its Canadian parent company Bestseller filed for bankruptcy this past summer. But the seven-year F1 veteran’s approach to Chip Ganassi led to talks regarding the team’s IMSA program, which lay dormant this year following the end of the highly successful partnership with Ford in the GT Le Mans class. Jan Magnussen did not respond to Motorsport.com’s attempts to confirm this news. Kevin Magnussen, the 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion, made his F1 debut for McLaren in 2014, scoring second place on his debut in the Australian Grand Prix. He would score 11 more top-10 finishes that season and take 11th in the drivers’ championship. However, the team made him reserve driver in 2015 when it signed Fernando Alonso, and at year’s end he was released. Magnussen then spent a season at the struggling Renault team before being hired by the one-year-old Haas squad in 2017, his highlight being ninth in the championship the following year. Since Wayne Taylor Racing elected to clean house regarding driver line-up as it switches from Cadillac to Acura for next year, it means WTR’s 2020 full-timers Ryan Briscoe and Renger van der Zande became available to partner Magnussen. Despite Briscoe’s seven-year association with Ganassi – three in IndyCar, four in sportscar –Motorsport.com is given to understand that van der Zande will be confirmed as the second full-timer in the Ganassi Cadillac. The 34-year-old Dutchman helped drive the WTR Cadillac to two Rolex 24 and two Petit Le Mans triumphs. Ganassi’s six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon is set to join Magnussen and Van der Zande for IMSA’s four endurance rounds – the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, Sebring 12 Hours, Watkins Glen 6 Hours and Petit Le Mans.

DS Techeetah to start 2020/21 season with 2019/20 car

Reigning Formula E teams’ champion DS Techeetah will carry over its existing car into the upcoming 2020-21 season before introducing a new powertrain package in April. DS Techeetah, which has won both teams’ and drivers’ titles since the Gen2 FE car was brought in, revealed a revised livery during its online launch on Wednesday. It also confirmed it would continue with the DS E-Tense FE20 machine that won four races last season in line with new championship cost-saving regulations voted in as a result of the global health crisis. Teams now have three options: they can opt to continue with their 2019-20 powertrain, bring an all-new set-up to be retained for two years, or carry over their existing powertrain for the start of campaign before switching to a new package in April. DS Techeetah, which keeps hold of double FE title-winner Jean-Eric Vergne and reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa as drivers, has decided on the latter. It will continue with the DS E-Tense FE20 for the opening rounds in Santiago and the double-header night races in Diriyah before swapping to its successor, which has been developed in tandem, for the Rome E-Prix on April 10. DS performance director Xavier Mestelan Pinon said: “Regarding this opportunity [with homologation cycles] we took the decision to develop two cars. “For the first two events, we will use the season six homologation but with brand new software. The software is very important in Formula E, it’s the key to performance. “After that, for the Rome E-Prix we will introduce the new homologation. It’s a brand-new powertrain with some ambitious technology. It’s very exciting as both drivers have already tested the [new] car and it seems to be very fast.” Mercedes has switched to an all-new powertrain, as has the NIO 333 team and Mahindra – with technical partner ZF developing the package. Da Costa added: “There are obviously ups and downs [to continuing with the current car]. We know exactly what we have going racing so I think we can really hit the ground running. We improved it, we’ve kept on moving forward with it. “The new car is just around the corner. That’s another step forward. I’m sure we’ll still be competitive, although I’m sure everyone else has taken a step forward.”

Mahindra to retain Lynn for 2020/2021 season

Mahindra has completed its driver line-up for the 2020/21 Formula E season after signing Alex Lynn alongside the previously-confirmed Alexander Sims. The announcement was made during an online presentation on Wednesday, in which Mahindra also unveiled its M7 Electro challenger for the seventh season of the all-electric championship. Ex-DS Virgin driver Lynn joined Mahindra for the final six races of the 2019/20 season in Berlin after the Indian team parted ways with Porsche-bound Pascal Wehrlein. The British driver logged three points finishes during that period, including a best result of fifth, to end the campaign just three points behind the outfit’s full season driver Jerome d’Ambrosio in the standings. It has now been confirmed that Lynn will remain with Mahindra for what will be only his second full-season in Formula E after his 2017/18 campaign with Virgin, although he has since competed in more than a dozen races at Jaguar and Mahindra. “I’m incredibly excited to be back for Season 7 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship and to be a part of Mahindra Racing,” said Lynn. “I’ve had the opportunity of driving the M7Electro on numerous test days and we’re all pretty proud of what we’ve come up with. We won’t know our competitiveness fully until the lights go out in Santiago, but we are here to consistently fight for wins and podiums; that’s what the team go racing for and so do I. “From that side I’m extremely excited and focused to be delivering the results that this hard-working team deserves.” Lynn will be joined in the team by former factory BMW driver Sims, who scored his maiden FE victory in the Saudi Arabia double header at the start of the 2019/20 season. Sims has replaced d’Ambrosio in Mahindra’s line-up, with the Belgian driver retiring from racing and taking up the role of deputy team principal at rival FE squad Venturi. In 2019/20, Mahindra endured its first podium-less campaign since the inaugural season of Formula E after being plagued by reliability issues following a change of gearbox supplier. It finished the season ninth among 12 teams, a drop of three places from its finishing position in 2018/19. “This is an incredibly exciting time for Mahindra Racing,” said team principal Dilbagh Gill. “We are heading into the championship’s (and the team’s!) seventh year in Formula E, and the first year ever as a World Championship series. “Formula E has gone from strength to strength over this time and we are extremely proud to have been part of that journey from the very beginning. “The team has been working incredibly hard to develop the M7Electro challenger and, with a strong driver pairing of Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn, I am confident that we will be back to securing podiums this season.”

Formula E to premier night races in Saudi Arabia

Formula E will hold its first ever night races in Saudi Arabia for the 2021 Season. They will be using lighting systems powered by renewable energy. The third and fourth races of the 14-round 2020/21 calendar will take place on February 26-27 in Diriyah, and both will run in low-light conditions. A low-consumption LED set-up that reportedly requires 50 percent less energy than a conventional system will be used to illuminate the track. The remaining floodlights will then be fuelled by “high-performing low-carbon vegetable oil made from sustainable materials”. For the championship’s third visit to Saudi Arabia, the race start time will be pushed back from 1500 local time (1200 GMT) by five hours to 2000 (1700 GMT). FE co-founder and chief championship officer Alberto Longo said: “We are very proud to partner with Saudi to create Formula E’s first-ever night race. I am confident the race will be spectacular and lead to a style of competitive action we haven’t seen before. “As with everything we do, our first thought was about how to bring our sporting vision to life in a sustainable way. Before we innovate our racing product, we must be confident we can maintain the standards of sustainable practice we hold ourselves accountable to.” The inaugural Saudi E-Prix was the country’s first major international sporting event, with the 2019-20 races the first FE double-header to be held in the Middle East. Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki AlFaisal Al Saud, the Saudi Arabia minister of sport added: “In 2018, the ancient historical city of Diriyah made history in hosting the first fully electric race on the streets of the region. “The debut event sparked so much joy and energy to our sporting journey and was one of a number of major sporting firsts that have since inspired our people and helped to shine a spotlight on Saudi Arabia’s massive transformation under the Kingdom’s vision 2030. “In 2019, Diryah was the first to host back to back races during a race weekend and now once again we will make sporting history. “It is very fitting that a place so ancient will showcase the latest in sustainable technology as Diriyah lights up to shine bright for the world to see. We look forward to the dramatic racing and incredible scenes that are guaranteed to unfold under the lights.” Formula 1 will visit Saudi Arabia for the first time next year for a street race in Jeddah, which will also take place at night.

Ricciardo ready to set the record straight in Bahrain

Daniel Ricciardo insists he’s “fired up” to help Renault put right its double DNF from last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit this weekend. Bahrain marks the start of the final run-in to the end of the 2020 season, with just three of the 17 races remaining. Renault was on course to secure a double points finish at the 2019 event, only for both Ricciardo and team-mate Nico Hulkenberg to retire simultaneously just a few laps from the end of the race. Ricciardo, who acknowledged his recent unblemished record in Bahrain, feels there is “unfinished business” for Renault to address. “The Sakhir circuit in Bahrain is a good one, I’ve always enjoyed racing there and night sessions are always fun to take part in,” Ricciardo said. “In recent years, I haven’t had the best results in Bahrain, but I’m looking to set that right this weekend. “I’m feeling much more on top of the car since we were last in Bahrain, so I think we should be in a good place. We also have a bit of unfinished business there after last season, so I’m pretty hungry and fired up.” Ricciardo’s current Renault team-mate Esteban Ocon is targeting a points finish a difficult run of form, with three retirements out of the last six races. The Frenchman, who will partner double world champion Fernando Alonso when Ricciardo leaves to join McLaren in 2021, believes luck has evaded him of late but is eager to perform this weekend. “I’m definitely feeling motivated after what happened at the last two races” Ocon said. “I’ve said it doesn’t feel like we have too much luck on our side of the garage, but I believe it’s in our own hands to turn that around. “There’s not much time to feel sorry for ourselves, so I’m determined to have a solid weekend and take some big points at a strategic time of the season.” Renault lost ground to its main rivals McLaren and Racing Point in the battle for third in the constructors’ championship after scoring just one point at the Turkish Grand Prix. The Enstone-based outfit has slipped to fifth in the standings, 13 points adrift of fourth-placed McLaren, with Racing Point a further five points clear in P3.

Bautista says Kawasaki treats WSBK like its MotoGP

Alvaro Bautista says Kawasaki has the luxury of being able to treat its World Superbike project with the same level of dedication that rival manufacturers commit to their MotoGP bikes.Honda rider Bautista made the remark during last week’s post-season test at Jerez, where Kawasaki unveiled the 2021 version of its ultra-successful ZX-10RR machine featuring radically revised front bodywork and an updated engine. Jonathan Rea set the fastest time of the test using the new bike at Jerez, and is back in action for another two-day test this week at Aragon. While Kawasaki’s 2021 machine represents its biggest year-on-year change in some seasons, the Japanese manufacturer has not gone down the route of producing a ‘homologation special’ in the mould of Ducati’s V4 Panigale R or BMW’s M1000RR. Asked if he was surprised about Kawasaki’s decision, Bautista replied: “When the bike is working well, why change? They keep winning, so why change the bike? “Maybe you think it’s a normal Superbike, but them for it’s like a MotoGP [bike] because they don’t have any other championships and they put all the effort in this championship. Maybe the bike looks normal, but inside is the secret.” Ex-MotoGP rider Bautista was eighth-fastest of the 11 WSBK riders present at Jerez, three places behind Honda teammate Leon Haslam. The Spanish rider said he found “some good points but also some bad points” experimenting with different set-ups, as the CBR1000RR-R goes into its second season of competition. “[This year] the bike was very new and I hope that for next season we have now a normal base, to start the work, especially in the winter,” said Bautista. “Maybe last season we start to work, not late, but with the [limited] time like this, and the COVID situation, we could not make more tests to make a base set-up.” Asked specifically what he has asked Honda’s engineers in Japan to deliver with the 2021 bike, Bautista said: “I want more turning and more rear grip, especially, and just fix a little bit on the electronic side, with the engine brake and the power delivery. “Today we made some set-up adjustments and we found some positives and some negatives. Now they have the data and I say to them, ‘I want this, this and this’ and they have to work to put all the good things together. We’ll see.”

Nissany given a third FP1 outing with Williams

Roy Nissany will be back in action for Williams at the Bahrain Grand Prix, putting in the laps in FP1. The 25-year-old Israeli driver will replace George Russell in the weekend’s opening practice session. Nissany has already had two Friday practices with Williams, driving the FW42 in Spain and again in Italy. “Bahrain is a very special track for me, driving a Formula One car around it for the first time means a lot,” he said. “It is always a great opportunity to develop on such a technical and demanding track.” Nissany will swap from Formula 1 to Formula 2 over the course of the weekend as he contests the final two rounds of the F2 season with Trident Racing. He is currently P19 in the championship having scored five points. He will also drive the FW43 in the post-season Abu Dhabi test next month, taking up the driving duties along with reserve driver Jack Aitken. Williams said in its statement that the team is looking ‘forward to hearing Roy’s feedback on how the car has changed since his previous outing in Monza, and to his feedback on the test components.’ Williams is the only team yet to score a single point this season. Russell and Nicholas Latifi have both had near misses with P11s with the team hoping to break its duck before the season is over. “I am really looking forward to these final three races, it has been a very intense season and it has absolutely flown by,” said Russell. “Bahrain is a circuit that I always enjoy and is a race that takes place at dusk which is an exciting dynamic to experience again. “There is plenty to look forward to and we want to end this season strong, to be satisfied and pleased with the job we have done before heading into the winter break and 2021.”

Barrichello: Hamilton better than Schumacher

Lewis Hamilton is “better than Michael Schumacher”, this was according to the latter seven time world champion’s former Ferrari teammate. Rubens Barrichello was commenting on his former rivals after Mercedes’ Hamilton matched F1 legend Schumacher’s record seven-title tally recently in Turkey. “I have raced against both Lewis and Michael, but I only fought against Lewis at the beginning of his Formula 1 career,” said the 48-year-old Brazilian, who retired with more than 300 grands prix to his name after 2011. “Still, I think Hamilton is better than Schumacher,” Barrichello added. The former Ferrari, Honda and Williams driver was also asked about two-time world champion Fernando Alonso’s return to Formula 1 with Renault-Alpine next year. “I think Fernando is ready for a comeback,” he said. “He looks very fit and I think that’s the biggest difference between him and Michael in 2010. Alonso is better prepared and has also raced in other categories in recent years,” Barrichello added. He even revealed that he was in Barcelona recently when Alonso, 39, got his first taste of Renault’s 2020 car for a filming day. “Honestly, I saw the driver I knew from 2005,” said Barrichello. “He discusses every detail and always looks ahead. I’m convinced that he still has the same will to perform.”

Jack Miller pays tribute to Pramac

Jack Miller has paid tribute to Pramac Racing for bringing out the best in him over the past three seasons and spurring him on to what will be a team leader factory Ducati Corse role in the 2021 MotoGP World Championship. The rider says it is down to Pramac Racing that he has flourished from a MotoGP ‘question mark’ to a fully-fledged team leader at Ducati for the 2021 MotoGP season. Though Miller wasn’t able to score the much desired first win in Pramac colours this season among the nine podiums he has otherwise achieved since 2018, seventh overall – seven points shy of third – marked his best overall finish in the standings since making his debut in 2015. Prior to joining Pramac Racing, Miller was considered something of an unknown quantity at MotoGP level following three years (one on the CRT LCR Honda and two with Marc VDS Honda) in which his headline grabbing maiden win in the wet at Assen in 2016 was interspersed with less notable results. However, Miller has flourished in the Italian team and, as he points out, the 2020 season could have gone very differenlyt had he not suffered four DNFs; one crash, two because of technical issues and another freak incident when his Ducati shut off after sucking up an errant visor tear-off from Fabio Quartararo ahead. Describing himself as a ‘question mark’ when he first arrived at Pramac, he says it is testament to the ‘life lessons’ he learned from them that he was able to ‘close a few mouths’. “I can’t thank Paolo Campinotti and Francesco Guidotti, all the guys over there at Pramac, for what they have done in these three years. First, I have never been in a team for more than two years, so to be here for three years feels like a lifetime. “The lessons they have taught me on and off track, they are life lessons I will never forget and I am forever grateful to them for this. When I arrived there I was a ‘question mark’, let’s say and I feel like we proved a few people wrong and closed a few mouths along the way. Hopefully we can keep that ball rolling.”

Fabio Quartararo Wins BMW M Qualifying Award

A premiere for the iconic BMW M Award: in the 2020 season, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) was the fastest qualifier in MotoGP™, which saw him added to the list of winners of the BMW M Award for the first time. His reward for his performances is the winner’s car for 2020: the new BMW M2 CS. The car was presented during the MotoGP™ season finale at the weekend as Portimão in Portugal hosted Grand Prix motorcycle racing for the first time. Quartararo claimed pole position four times in 2020, more than any of his rivals, and picked up a total of 225 points for the BMW M Award classification, his lead over his closest rival being 13 points. Quartararo’s BMW M Award victory in the 2020 season ended the impressive record streak of Spain’s Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), who won the BMW M Award seven years in a row between 2013 and 2019. However, this year Marquez missed much of the season due to injury. After the final qualifying session of the season on Saturday, winner Quartararo was presented with his new BMW M2 CS. In attendance at the award ceremony was Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports. Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW M GmbH, abstained from travelling to Portugal due to the current coronavirus situation, but followed the final from Munich. “First of all, I would like to thank Dorna for managing to organise an exciting MotoGP season with 15 Grands Prix against all odds in this difficult year globally. It wasn’t an easy task, but Dorna made it possible,” said Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “It meant we were able to appear as title sponsor for the first time at the ‘BMW M Grand Prix of Styria’ at Spielberg as part of our involvement as the ‘Official Car of MotoGP’. We were also able to continue the BMW M Award tradition and present it for the 18th time this year.” “Congratulations to Fabio Quartararo, who more than deserves this prize with four pole positions and a total of nine front rows. We selected the BMW M2 CS for the winner’s car this year, our limited special edition, with which we bring many components from racing onto the road. We hope Fabio has a lot of fun with his new high-performance car!” Quartararo was also happy he received the award, “What a crazy, exciting season, I’m delighted to have won the race for the BMW M Award. It’s great that BMW M GmbH has been acknowledging our performances in qualifying with this special prize for so many years. Many thanks for this recognition.” “I’m already really looking forward to taking my new BMW M2 CS for a spin. It looks like a racing car for the road and is no doubt a lot of fun. Huge thanks to BMW M GmbH!”

Verstappen says new 2022 rules not designed to stop Mercedes

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has dismissed suggestions that the 2022 Formula 1 regulations are designed to stop Mercedes from dominating and says they “need to make racing more exciting”. In 2022, F1 moves to all-new technical regulations with cars designed to improve the show through a reduction of downforce. The shift from downforce primarily generated by the surface of the car to a more ground-effect driven concept should reduce turbulent air, which has prevented drivers from racing each other closely for a number of years. The technical changes coincide with the introduction of a budget cap and a more equitable prize money structure, as part of a wide-ranging overhaul of the sport to level the playing field. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff argued some of the changes are designed to put the brakes on his team’s crushing display of dominance in the V6 hybrid era, Mercedes scooping up all drivers’ and constructors’ titles since 2014. Wolff said that “everything has been done to stop us”, but that the new 2022 challenge “will motivate” the Brackley outfit to stay on top. Red Bull’s Verstappen, the driver who has been the biggest threat to Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in both 2019 and 2020, refutes Wolff’s claims that the new regulations are designed to stop Mercedes from winning. Verstappen argues that the technical changes are necessary to improve the show. “No, I think those rules are just the result of new owners listening to teams and drivers,” Verstappen said in Turkey when asked about Wolff’s comments by Motorsport.com. “They hear that it is really difficult to overtake and that we want more close racing. “You could see the current issues at Imola for example. Valtteri drove around with a car that was three to four tenths slower because of the damage, but I couldn’t get past him. “Even though I was much faster, you could see that once I did get past him. We have to find a solution for that.” Verstappen has enjoyed the unpredictability of the 2020 MotoGP season and hopes F1’s new rules will make qualifying less decisive in the future. “We need the racing in F1 to be more exciting and drivers to be able to follow other cars more closely and not that qualifying is the deciding factor during a race weekend as it is right now,” the Dutchman added. “Take a look at the MotoGP championship for example. Even if you qualify tenth, you can still win the race. That hardly happens in Formula 1, just because it’s so difficult to follow other cars at most of our circuits. “I think that’s why the new regulations are coming in from 2022 onwards. And whether those new rules will slow Mercedes down or not, you can’t even say that at this moment.”

Renault wary of Ferrari after a lousy Turkey performance

Renault has fallen a long way behind in Turkey in the battle for third place and now even has to look back, because Ferrari is very close. According to Esteban Ocon, however, the team does not need to worry. The 2020 Formula 1 season is particularly exciting behind Mercedes and Red Bull Racing. There McLaren, Racing Point, Renault, Ferrari and sometimes AlphaTauri are fighting for the points and that results in an exciting championship. However, Renault has been hit hard in Turkey because it only managed to score one point. Because of that one point, Renault is suddenly eighteen points behind Racing Point and thirteen points behind McLaren. In addition, Ferrari has also suddenly come closer and the Italians are only six points behind the French. With three races to go, however, anything is still possible and Ocon thinks that those races are in Renault’s favour. “I think we generally perform very well when it is very hot. Normally we can handle the tyres very well on these kind of heavy circuits, so I am really looking forward to it,” said Esteban Ocon. “The car has always done well this season in these kinds of conditions, so I have no doubt it won’t be good for the weekend either”, added the Frenchman.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz enjoys a £343m payout

Despite the global pandemic that has impacted the lives of so many this year, Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz will likely look back on 2020 as a banner year, at least in terms of his personal finances, thanks to a €343m windfall. The Austrian billionaire and co-founder of the energy drink company is among the happy few who have received a special €550m dividend paid out by Red Bull. According to filings published on Monday by Austria’s market regulator, Red Bull GmbH distributed a €211.4m dividend to the family of Chaleo Yoovidhya, the former Thai duck farmer who invented the company’s energy drink and who died in 2012. But the bulk of the one-off payment was made to Mateschitz, the man who discovered and skilfully marketed through extreme sports – and Formula 1 in particular – the famous beverage, called Krating Daeng in Thai, that gives one’s wings. According to reports, Red Bull sold an estimated 7.5bn cans around the world in 2019. Mateschitz, a former globetrotting marketer who used to sell toothpaste, discovered the energy drink and its benefits on jet-lag in 1984 on a business trip to Thailand, and subsequently acquired an interest in the founding company in 1987. Thirty-three years, many billions of cans and 65 wins in Formula 1 later, the 76-year-old billionaire, worth an estimated $27.5bn, still holds a 49% stake in Red Bull, while another 49% is owned by 11 family members of the late Chaleo Yoovidhya. The remaining 2% is in the hands of Chaleo’s eldest son, Chalerm.

Rossi to return to 12 hours of Gulf with his brother Marini

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi will return to the Gulf 12 Hours in Bahrain in January with his Avintia-bound half-brother Luca Marini joining him in a Ferrari 488 GT3.Rossi contested the 12-hour event at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi last year in a Kessel Racing-run 488 Ferrari partnered by Marini and his long-time friend and business partner Alessio Salucci. The trio took a class win in their 488 GT3 in the Pro-Am category and were third overall and will return to defend their crown in January. A brief statement from the organisers said: “MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi will return to race at the Gulf 12 Hours on 9 January 2021 at the Bahrain International Circuit. “Rossi made his Gulf 12 Hours debut at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi in 2019 with the Monster VR46 Kessel Racing team, winning the GT3 Pro-Am class and taking third position overall. “He will return alongside teammates Luca Marini and Alessio Salucci in their Ferrari 488 GT3.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has been moved from Yas Marina to the Bahrain International Circuit and delayed from its December slot to January. Rossi hinted earlier this year his plans were to race the Gulf 12 Hours instead of taking part in the World Rally Championship finale at Rally Monza in December. The Italian isn’t the only MotoGP rider to have raced at the Gulf 12 Hours, with former Yamaha teammate and three-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo taking part in the event in 2016. Rossi’s protege Franco Morbidelli was announced on Saturday morning as an entrant in the WRC finale at Monza next month in a Hyundai WRC3 car. This weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix marks Rossi’s final outing with the factory Yamaha squad, having spent 15 years in two stints with the team. He will depart for Petronas SRT in 2021 alongside Morbidelli, but will remain a factory-contracted rider and have machine parity with Maverick Vinales and his replacement Fabio Quartararo. Marini is currently 18 points off the Moto2 championship lead ahead of this weekend’s Portugal finale, with the VR46 rider one of four capable of taking the crown. He will step up to MotoGP in 2021 with the Avintia squad in partnership with VR46 after signing a deal with Ducati, and will join current Moto2 points leader Enea Bastianini. Rossi’s debut Gulf 12 Hours appearance came days after driving seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton’s 2017 title-winning Mercedes at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit near Valencia. John Hunter Nemechek joins Kyle Busch Motorsports for 2021 truck series

John Hunter Nemechek will join Kyle Busch Motorsports for the 2021 NASCAR Truck Series season. Nemechek, who just completed his rookie Cup Series season with Front Row Motorsports, will move back to the Truck Series in 2021. He will compete for the title with KBM, driving the No. 4 Toyota Tundra. The 23-year-old revealed last week that he and FRM would part ways, leaving many to wonder where the young racer was heading with limited rides available at the Cup level. The Truck Series is a familiar place for Nemechek, having won six races with the family-owned NEMCO Motorsports between 2015 and 2018. He also has one victory in the Xfinity Series with Chip Ganassi Racing. “Kyle and Samantha with the support of Toyota have built an organization that has won races and championships on a consistent basis and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to carry on the winning tradition by getting back to victory lane in the Camping World Truck Series next year,” said Nemechek in a release from KBM. “I can’t thank the partners that have supported my career through the years enough for their continued support and I’m looking forward to building relationships with new partners this year. Bring on 2021 — Let’s Go Places!” He replaces Raphael Lessard, who placed 12th in points and won once this season at Talladega Superspeedway. “I began my XFINITY Series career with NEMCO and I’ve had a long-running relationship with Joe and the Nemechek family, so it’s cool to see things come full circle with being able to sign John Hunter to race at KBM,” said team owner Kyle Busch. “John Hunter is a proven winner in the Camping World Truck Series, as well as the Xfinity Series, and someone who we are confident will be able to put the No. 4 Tundra up front on a consistent basis and compete for victories each and every race. Despite only being 23 years old, he has a lot of experience across all three series and with next year’s Truck Series schedule including a lot of events where it’s just show up and race, having an experienced driver in one of our full-time Tundras is going to be beneficial to our whole organization.”
