The South African endured another tough day for KTM on the opening practice day ahead of Sunday’s Doha MotoGP Grand Prix. However, speaking after his day on track, one of the discussion points was centered around his race battle last weekend against Rossi, who was not happy with Binder following their second moment on track following contact in Austria last season. However, Binder was quick to say that it was a non issue for him as there was no contact during the overtake. “I’ve had two moments with him. One time in Austria we both went completely off the track which is understandable so I think a second time is normal to be upset!,” said Binder. “But to be fair I didn’t touch him at all. Maybe he is a bit sensitive. I don’t feel that I did anything wrong. “I went in next to him. He released the brake and he wanted to close the line, I released the brake too, end of story.” It’s been a tough start to the 2021 season so far for KTM with the bike not suiting the Losail circuit at all. And while the overall position doesn’t look good, Binder is feeling like the bike is more competitive this weekend. The former Moto3 champion said: “It is definitely a bit more positive. All the guys did a good job this week and I feel that my bike is working better. “I feel a lot more confident with some of the changes they have made.” Binder had a few issues pop up late on which affected his attempts to get into the top ten, with debris getting stuck in one of his tyres. “Problems were out of our control in FP2 and it was like riding on ice. My other tyre had a chunk in it! It was very weird. I improved the time attack in the final minutes and I feel like I rode quite well, but it was not enough for the top-ten. “Tomorrow we need to try to improve the rear grip, but in FP3 it will be very difficult to improve the lap times so we need to concentrate on the pace and try to stay within the top-two in Q1. “Today my pace is more constant. But not fast enough. Need to understand the pace of other guys. I think it will be difficult to do that.” Until today there had been no sign of engine issues as was the case for Yamaha last season when they had to drastically prolong the same engines for a lot longer than would be expected or wished. FP2 ahead of the Doha MotoGP Grand Prix was dominated by Ducati, as Jack Miller concluded the session fastest from team-mate Francesco Bagnaia and Johann Zarco. Just like last week, free practice two was as vital a session as there is before qualifying, with automatic progression to Q2 extremely likely. Ducati as a whole had a quiet morning session in Qatar with only Jorge Martin inside the top ten. But as the hot and humid sun was replaced by the night’s bright lights, Ducati impressed once again to finish with four of the five fastest times. It was a slow burner for the most part with Bagnaia fastest after the initial race runs. The Italian remained there until the action started to ramp up with 15 minutes left. Bagnaia was first replaced at the top of the leaderboard by the man who replaced him at Pramac Ducati Martin, before a flurry of changes took place. Alex Rins went quicker moments later, before Fabio Quartararo and Aleix Espargaro exchanged fastest times. But after a near highside on his penultimate run, Miller regrouped to take top spot by +0.313s in the final five minutes. Behind the Ducati trio was Quartararo, with Martin in fifth. Sixth was Aprilia’s Espargaro who had topped the earlier FP1 session. Seventh was Franco Morbidelli who managed to recover from his mechanical issues during free practice one, while Rins was eighth. Closing out the top ten were Qatar race one winner Maverick Vinales in ninth and top Honda rider Stefan Bradl in tenth. Morbidelli has bagged himself a provisional Q2 place in seventh ahead of Suzuki’s Rins, Vinales and Stefan Bradl – currently the only Honda rider in Q2. His LCR counterparts Takaaki Nakagami and Alex Marquez both suffered late crashes and were left out of Q2 in 15th and 16th behind SRT’s Valentino Rossi and Mir on the Suzuki. Behind Rins and Vinales, was the impressive rookie and top Ducati rider Jorge Martin. Fifth was Franco Morbidelli who endured a difficult session with two separate, but very similar looking mechanical problems as smoke was coming from the rear of the M1 Yamaha. The Italian was left frustrated in the pit box after cutting two stints short. This comes after more issues during last weekend’s race for the 2020 title runner-up. Danilo Petrucci had a much better time on day one of the Doha Grand Prix than he did last weekend, as he finished a session in the top ten for the first time in 2021. Fabio Quartararo was seventh fastest for the Factory Yamaha team ahead of World Champion Joan Mir. Rounding out the top ten were the Hondas of Stefan Bradl and LCR rider Takaaki Nakagami. As was the case last weekend, Johann Zarco was the first rider to suffer a crash, but was unhurt from the incident and finished in last place.

UN human rights experts this week denounced Indonesia’s mega tourism project in Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), saying that the project, which is closely tied to the world-class MotoGP races, “tramples on human rights.” In a statement, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Olivier de Schutter said that the US$3 billion project on Lombok island has involved aggressive land grabs, forced evictions of Sasak indigenous peoples, along with intimidation and threats against human rights defenders. State-owned Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), which oversees the developments of the Mandalika Priority Tourism Zone, has yet to pay any compensation or settle the land disputes, according to the experts. “Farmers and fisher folks have been expelled from their land and have endured the destruction of their houses, fields, water sources, cultural and religious sites, as the Government of Indonesia and the ITDC groomed Mandalika to become a ‘New Bali’,” Schutter said. This follows concerns raised by Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) last year, who had urged ITDC to halt the construction of the MotoGP circuit in Mandalika, following reports of land disputes with local residents. Mandalika, the coastal resort area where the MotoGP races are set to take place, is located in NTB’s Central Lombok regency. The government is developing an enormous tourism complex that includes motorcycle circuits, parks, resorts, and hotels. Indonesia signed a deal with Dorna Spots ⁠— the exclusive commercial and television rights holder for MotoGP ⁠— in 2019 to host the world-class motorcycling races for five years. The initial contract has since been extended to 10 years, with the first race initially set to take place this year.

NBA legend Jordan is said to have personally contacted Hamilton and convinced the Mercedes driver that he has nothing more to prove in Formula 1 and that his next calling is to join Wallace in tackling NASCAR. Jordan is also said to be underwriting Hamilton’s $25-million salary from 2022 until the end of 2024, reportedly the length of the first phase of the deal, which means that the basketball legend will ramp up his personal involvement in the project. For Hamilton, this provides an incentive beyond Formula 1, a project which he can embrace at the end of his final season with Mercedes. The German team have provided the Briton with immense cars and he delivered six titles for them (maybe seven come to the end of 2021) to add to the one he claimed for McLaren in 2008. Apart from Monster Energy as the title sponsor, it is believed that Hamilton has had talks with Toto Wolff and Mercedes AMG, convincing them to be part of the programme, with technical and financial support before a fully-fledged NASCAR programme for the German manufacturer starting 2023, a year after Hamilton’s first full season Stateside. For Hamilton, this is a huge change of direction from a sport he has dominated for almost a decade to one where he will start off as a rookie and will have a ton to learn. He will also be running in packs with very equal machinery, something he has not been accustomed to since Mercedes started dominating the sport so ruthlessly. However, both drivers have shown visible signs of improving over pre-season testing and their first Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, the team will be hoping that all of these learning experiences will put both drivers and the team in a more advantageous position for the 2022 regulation changes. Nikita Mazepin doesn’t believe that his first lap crash was down to anything else except personal error, the Russian got a good start so much so that he was trying to avoid hitting his team-mate Schumacher who had a inferior start to the Russian and he lost the car – the combination of cold tyres and the kerb combining to cause his spin. “It was very simple – I made a mistake. It was just one of those things. My start had been good, I got into turn one taking the outside line. I was then going through turn two and I was really trying to avoid Mick (Schumacher) as he was close and got too much on power – the tires didn’t take it” Mazepin is very apologetic to the whole team as they deserved much better than the performance he gave after working so hard all weekend, despite this there will always be positives that the Russian can take away from the weekend and use this experience going forward into future Grand Prix’s. “I’m very sorry for the team as they deserved to do much better than that. The quadruple world champion was ousted by Ferrari but switched to Aston Martin for 2021 and beyond – and had a dire pre-season test and first race in Bahrain. “At Ferrari it was the same thing,” F1 legend Berger told the official Australian GP podcast. “I just feel he is not free, not relaxed,” said the former Toro Rosso co-owner. “He maybe wants to prove things, but at this moment it is not possible because the car is not good enough, or his own form is not good enough.” Berger said Vettel remains one of F1’s “outstanding drivers”, but thinks he struggles when the pressure ramps up. “He never reacts very well under pressure,” he said. “Remember when Daniel (Ricciardo) came to Red Bull and was very strong, he put pressure onto Sebastian.” Vettel is only 33, but Berger thinks the German is clearly “at the end of his career”. “When you have done so many races, there comes a point where you’re not in the situation anymore where you’d like to take all the risks, where you fight like you would fight before you won any races,” he said. “In some ways, it just hasn’t worked out well for him. He starts to do mistakes, people then start to question him. Step by step there’s more and more pressure, and he doesn’t like pressure.”

Steiner blames Mazepin’s first lap crash on his character

Nikita Mazepin had a disastrous start to life as an F1 driver, with him qualifying at the back of the grid (though he started in P19 due to Sebastian Vettel getting a penalty) and only navigating a couple of corners before crashing his car on Sunday. The incident, which was entirely self-inflicted and didn’t involve another driver, forced Mazepin to retire from his debut race in the pinnacle of motorsport just a matter of seconds after it had got underway. Speaking after the race, Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said Mazepin “was pretty beat up” but is looking forward to what he’s hoping to be a better weekend in Imola. “He was pretty beat up. I just said to him to keep his head up and keep on going,” Steiner said. “For sure, it is not ideal what happened but it happened so he beats himself up pretty badly. “He is ready to go again so we pushed him up again but otherwise Mick did a good job. At least we got half of it achieved. 50 percent there,” he added. Steiner was asked if Mazepin’s mistakes earlier in the weekend led to the young Russian being over-motivated and pushing too hard at the start to make up ground. “He pushed a little bit harder but I think that’s his character more than anything else, just to try to find the limit and sometimes you go over it,” Steiner replied. “I’m not really surprised about that because he tries to do the best he can and obviously, our car is not easy to drive. “I think he is one of these guys where he just tries very hard.”

Joey Logano wins Bristol dirt race as he becomes seventh different winner in an unpredictable NASCUP Season

Seven winners in seven races in NASCAR’s Cup Series as Joey Logano added his name to the list with victory in the Bristol dirt race. Joey Logano added his name to the winners’s list in 2021’s incredible NASCAR Cup Series season. The Team Penske driver took victory in the premier stock car class’s first race on dirt for 51 years, winning from Ricky Stenhouse Jr after a mistake by Denny Hamlin took him out of contention for the win on the overtime restart. Bristol was covered in 2300 truckloads of dirt for the special event that many had predicted the drivers with prior dirt experience would dominate. That couldn’t have been further from reality as favourites Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell suffered their own calamities in the early phase of the race. Larson, victor of the 2020 and 2021 Chilli Bowl Nationals dirt race, was sent to the back of the pack at the start for an engine change and was caught up in several wrecks as he made his way through the field, including the incident that took Bell out of the race. Bell spun up in the high line on lap 52 right in front of Larson before being collected by the no42 of Ross Chastain. While the damage was fixable on Larson’s car, Bell’s car had sprung an oil leak and the incident ended his afternoon. Martin Truex Jr dominated the opening stage after taking victory in the truck race earlier in the day, but a surprise package in Daniel Suarez wrestled the lead from the Joe Gibbs Racing no19, using his front bumper to take the lead in the early laps of Stage 2. The Mexican driver led the majority of the way until a late caution in the second stage that allowed the field to close in once more and gave Joey Logano the chance to slip by for a race lead he didn’t surrender. A spin for no66 Mike Marler brought out the final yellow with four to go and set up an overtime finish. Hamlin was told over his team radio to “make it happen” from second but sent it in a little too deep on the final restart going into Turn One. He slipped up the track and into the wall, giving Logano the cushion he needed to take the victory. The first dirt race in the top NASCAR series for over 50 years was a resounding success entertainment-wise, with the track announcing mid-way through Monday’s race that it would be back for 2022, hopefully with packed grandstands. While the issue of dust reared its head as the evening sun caught the dust particles and made vision a major issue without a wetted track surface, NASCAR will have learned its lessons in time for the return of dirt in ’22. The drivers gave their seal of approval to the event, with many including Truex and Suarez, who had no prior dirt racing experience until the lead into the weekend, showing competitiveness against the dirt racing pros in the field. Bristol on dirt was one of the first major attractions in the altered 2021 calendar as NASCAR looks to shake up its racing offerings away from mile-and-a-half ovals. Races on the Daytona Road Course and later visits to Road America and COTA add road course unknowns into the mix which have provided some of the most action-packed races in recent years. Its experimentation with new formats such as the addition of the ‘choose cone’, allowing drivers to pick which lane they restart in, has added a strategic element to restarts, making driving precision and focus from teams even more important in late-race situations. With Logano becoming the seventh winner in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season, it is quickly becoming up to be one of the most unpredictable and exciting racing series to watch.
