Haas F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg has found himself at the center of controversy following a stewards’ decision with damning implications for the upcoming 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race.
The German was handed a three-place grid penalty due to a breach of the FIA regulations following an impressive qualifying run where secured his best starting position of the season.
Nico Hulkenberg’s grid penalty drops him from fourth to seventh on the grid, a decision that could impact not only his race but also the competitive standings in the Constructors’ Championship.
The incident happened during qualifying for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit, where Hulkenberg’s performance had initially garnered praise.
The 37-year old outqualified several top contenders, including reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, showcasing his skill and determination as he aimed to help Haas secure vital points in their battle against Alpine for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
However, Nico Hulkenberg’s moment of triumph quickly turned into a setback when it was revealed that he had overtaken two cars in the tunnel section of the pit exit—a move deemed illegal by race officials.
The FIA’s investigation into Hulkenberg’s actions was thorough as the F1 stewards reviewed various forms of evidence, including marshalling data, video footage, and in-car recordings and the Haas driver was summoned to the stewards post-qualifying.
During the hearing, Hulkenberg did not contest that he had violated the race director’s instructions. Instead, he argued that he felt compelled to overtake in order to secure a competitive lap time during Q3.
Despite acknowledging the challenging positioning of Haas’ garages, which limited their options for track exit, the F1 stewards maintained that overtaking during such circumstances could not justify breaching established regulations.
The FIA also added that prohibition against overtaking in specific areas is designed to prevent dangerous situations on track, and therefore they deemed a grid penalty for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix necessary.
Their statement read: “The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 27 [Nico Hulkenberg], team representative and reviewed marshalling system data, video, timing and in-car video evidence.
“The driver did not dispute during the hearing that he did not follow the Race Director’s instructions, but stated that he had no other option but to breach the rules in order to get a lap in.
“Whilst the Stewards acknowledge that the position of the team’s garages limits their options to send the cars out on track, this can never be used as an excuse to breach any regulations.
“The prohibition of overtaking in certain areas as the pit lane or, in this case, the pit exit, is implemented to prevent potentially dangerous situations and therefore the Stewards determine that a grid drop is warranted in this case.”
This decision has broader implications for both Nico Hulkenberg and Haas F1 Team. The three-place penalty not only affects his starting position but also alters the dynamics of the Constructors’ Championship battle.
Entering the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Haas trailed Alpine by just five points, making every position crucial. With Hulkenberg now starting behind Alpine’s Pierre Gasly—who moves up to fifth—Haas faces an uphill battle to reclaim lost ground in this critical phase of the season.
As it stands, Hulkenberg will line up on the grid alongside seasoned competitors like Fernando Alonso and George Russell. Lando Norris will start from pole alongside his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.
The challenge ahead is formidable; not only does he have to navigate through a field of skilled drivers, but he must also contend with the added pressure of needing to score points for his team while recovering from the setback.
