Nelson Piquet in trouble once again after jewel controversy

Nelson Piquet was banned from the Formula 1 paddock for making racial and homophobic remarks about Lewis Hamilton, but it now seems the Brazilian is in trouble once again.

Three-time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet could face additional sanctions after keeping Saudi Arabian jewels for former president Jair Bolsonaro, just one month after receiving a £780,000 fine.

Piquet made his remarks when analyzing the crash between Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the 2021 British Grand Prix and his loss to Nico Rosberg in 2016 as Mercedes teammates.

Hamilton, 38, has praised the government for their quite outstanding response to Piquet’s offensive remarks, as the seven-time world champion is an honorary Brazilian citizen. Piquet’s remarks led to a ban from the F1 paddock.

However, following a report from Brazilian source Globo, the Brazilian is undoubtedly still in the public eye in his home country.

Globo claims that some Saudi Arabian jewels that were gifted to Bolsonaro by the Saudi Arabian government in 2019 were kept in a shed on Piquet’s farm. It’s thought that Bolsonaro kept the jewels hidden on Piquet’s property rather than declaring them so he could keep them for himself.

Piquet, a fervent admirer of Bolsonaro, went on a tirade in a video after Lula de Silva won the presidential election, which put him in hot water once more.

“We’re going to get Lula, son of a b****, out of here,” Piquet said in the video,as another man said: “That’s it! Brazil above everything, God above everything.”

The video ends with Piquet saying: “And Lula there in a cemetery, son of a b****.”

Piquet is the father of Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet, who frequently defended her father’s actions while he was at the center of controversy.
