NASCAR postpones Dover Cup race due to poor weather

NASCAR has decided to postpone the remainder of Sunday’s Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway due to bad weather.

NASCAR has decided to postpone a Cup Series race for the first time in the 2022 season due to bad weather.

After 78 of the 400 scheduled laps on the four-turn, 1.0-mile (1.609-kilometer) high-banked Dover Motor Speedway circuit in Dover, Delaware, the DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne was delayed by a red flag for rain on Sunday afternoon.

To be regarded as an official race, the event, which started on time shortly after 3 p.m. ET, must reach the finish of the second stage or the halfway point, whichever comes first.

While stage two ends at lap 250, the race will be declared official after the halfway point (lap 200).

Due to weather, two of the last three spring races at the “Monster Mile” have been pushed back to Monday, and three of the last four spring races have been cancelled. Weather has had a role in four of the last five.

The May 2018 race was suspended, although it was resumed later on Sunday evening, unlike today’s event. In addition, unlike today’s race, the May 2019 race at the track never got off the ground before being postponed till Monday.

Due to COVID-19-related constraints, the May 2020 race was moved back, and it didn’t take place until late August.

This year’s NASCAR events have been hampered by inclement weather, most recently two weeks ago when the dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway was cancelled due to rain. However, the race was restarted and completed on the originally scheduled race day.

On Monday, May 2, the DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne will recommence. Beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1 will stream the remaining 322 laps live from Dover Motor Speedway. Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports is the race leader.
