NASCAR option tire confirmed for Phoenix Cup race

Goodyear has confirmed the implementation of NASCAR option tire for the Shriners Children’s 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway on March.

This strategic tire introduction represents a significant evolution in racing dynamics, offering teams unprecedented strategic flexibility and potentially transforming competitive performance on the track.

The NASCAR option tire – a softer compound designed to provide enhanced grip and more aggressive performance – will be strategically deployed during the March 9th race weekend at Phoenix Raceway according to RACER.

Teams will be granted a total of six sets of standard “Primary” tires and two sets of “Option” tires, with an additional set of each allocated for practice sessions.

The carefully calculated tire allocation allows teams to experiment with different racing strategies and potentially gain competitive advantages through intelligent tire management.

The decision to introduce the NASCAR option tire stems from successful experimental deployments in previous racing events, including the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway and a points-paying race at Richmond Raceway.

These earlier trials demonstrated the potential for increased racing excitement and strategic complexity. During the Richmond event, for instance, driver Daniel Suarez dramatically showcased NASCAR option tire’s potential by navigating through the field and leading 93 laps after starting 21st, highlighting the transformative impact of this tire strategy.

The softer option tire, identifiable by red lettering on its sidewall, is engineered to deliver higher initial speeds but experiences more rapid degradation compared to the standard primary tire.

This characteristic introduces a fascinating strategic element where teams must carefully balance the tire’s performance potential against its shorter operational lifespan. Drivers and teams will need to make critical decisions about when and how to deploy NASCAR option tires for maximum competitive advantage.

Interestingly, NASCAR has indicated that the performance of the option tire at the Phoenix race could determine its future role in the championship finale. If the tire proves successful during the March 9 event, it may become the primary tire for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race in November.

However, NASCAR has explicitly stated that multiple tire compounds will not be used during the championship-deciding event, ensuring a standardized competitive environment for the season’s most crucial race.

The tire allocation protocol for the Phoenix race follows a precise framework. Teams will receive one primary and one option tire set for practice, with qualifying requiring the use of a primary tire set.

During the 312-lap race, teams will have six primary tire sets, two option tire sets, and the qualifying set already mounted on the car. Critically, NASCAR will not mandate specific tire usage times, allowing teams complete strategic discretion in deploying their tire sets.

The March 9 Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway promises to be a pivotal moment in NASCAR’s tire strategy evolution. Fans can catch the full broadcast on FOX, with television coverage commencing at 3:30 PM ET.

The Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will also provide comprehensive radio coverage of the event, ensuring racing enthusiasts can follow every strategic twist and turn.
