Miguel Oliveira out of Indonesian MotoGP after sustaining injury in practice crash

Miguel Oliveira has been ruled unfit to continue racing for the remainder of Indonesian MotoGP weekend after sustaining fractured wrist following practice crash.

The Portuguese rider suffered a huge crash during the opening practice session for the 2024 Indonesian MotoGP at the Mandalika International Circuit and sustained a fractured wrist that will see him sidelined for the weekend.

The incident happened during a particularly challenging session characterized by a dusty track, which has been noted as a contributing factor to several riders struggling for grip.

As Oliveira approached the Turn 3-4 double left, he experienced a highside that sent him and his Trackhouse Aprilia bike tumbling down the track with the impact severe enough to warrant immediate medical attention.

Following the crash, he was seen sitting upright on the kerbing but soon after marshals placed him on a stretcher and transported him to the medical center for evaluation.

Initial assessments revealed that Miguel Oliveira had sustained a fractured wrist, which has not only sidelined him for the remainder of this weekend’s Indonesian MotoGP but also casts doubt on his participation in the upcoming Japanese MotoGP.

The news of Oliveira’s injury is particularly disheartening given his previous success at this venue; he won the inaugural race at Mandalika in 2022.

Trackhouse Racing released a statement confirming the injury and detailing that he would undergo further examinations, including a three-dimensional CT scan to determine whether surgery would be necessary.

The statement read: “After crashing mid-session, Miguel Oliveira was transferred to the circuit medical center for checks where it was established that his right wrist was fractured.

“He was then flown, by helicopter, to the hospital in Mataram (Lombok) for a three-dimensional CT scan which highlighted that Miguel suffered a multiple fracture of the radius bone.

“The fracture has been successfully stabilized and Miguel is alert and will fly back to Portugal for a surgical consultation.

“Further information will be published when available and in the meantime everyone at Trackhouse Racing wishes Miguel a speedy recovery.”

This incident serves as a major setback in Oliveira’s career as he enters his sixth year in the MotoGP class and prepares for a transition to the Prima Pramac Yamaha Factory Team for the 2025-26 seasons.

This move had been officially announced just weeks prior to his crash, highlighting an important phase in his career where he aims to contribute significantly to Yamaha’s efforts in returning their bike to competitive form.

In light of this recent injury, Oliveira’s focus will now shift from preparing for his new role at Yamaha to recovering from his wrist injury. The 29-year old currently ranks 14th in the 2024 MotoGP World Championship standings with 71 points.
