Miami Grand Prix organisers say track is 95% complete

With less than three weeks until Miami hosts its inaugural Grand Prix, the event’s organiser Richard Cregan says the F1 track is “95 percent complete.”

The fifth round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship will be held on May 8 at the Miami International Autodrome, a race that has been in the works for F1 and its partner in Florida’s Magic City for several years.

After initial plans to hold the race along Biscayne Boulevard were shelved, a plan surfaced to relocate the event to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, with a 3.36-mile street course built around the NFL’s Miami Dolphins’ home stadium.

As the Miami International Autodrome is getting ready to host Formula One for the first time on the 6th and 8th of May, new progress images have been released.

The 5.4-kilometer, 19-turn track is now “95 percent complete” — one year after building began close to the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL franchise the Miami Dolphins, and part of a vast site campus.

It will have three DRS zones, with calculations indicating full throttle for more than half of the lap and a high speed of 320 km/h.

“We’re in the final stages of this incredible circuit that will host the first-ever Formula 1 race in Miami,” said Cregan, the Miami GP’s CEO.

“We are delighted with the progress we have made and it’s a huge credit to the hard work of the team here in Miami, in consultation with both Formula 1 and the FIA to get this circuit finished in a tight timeline.

“We have tried to create a track that drivers love to race on and a campus that offers unique, best-in-class fan experiences; and we can’t wait for the first weekend in May to be here.”

Last year, on April 21, construction works on Miami’s International Autodrome began, and a year later, crews are putting the finishing touches on the venue’s permanent structures, while the final asphalt was set in March.

“There has been no compromise on any aspect of the circuit design or quality of construction,” added Cregan.

“In my experience of working with new venues over the years, I’ve never seen as much effort on perfecting the surface of the track as we have done in Miami.

“Everything was exactly per the design, and everyone involved in construction has done an incredible job.”
