Mexico City E-Prix 2025: Pascal Wehrlein claims pole in Porsche front-row lockout

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team marked its first front-row lockout of the season with Pascal Wehrlein taking pole position for Mexico City E-Prix 2025 ahead of teammate Antonio Felix da Costa.

The qualifying session took place under dry conditions at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, despite initial concerns about potential rain, setting the stage for an exhilarating competition among the world’s top electric racing drivers.

The qualifying format for Mexico E-Prix 2025 consisted of a group stage followed by Formula E knockout duels. In Group A, drivers were eager to set quick lap times early on, with conditions gradually improving as the track dried.

Pascal Wehrlein topped this session, showcasing his exceptional driving skills and strategic acumen. His performance was closely followed by Oliver Rowland and Sébastien Buemi, although Buemi’s lap time was later disqualified due to a technical infringement, which ultimately cost him a chance to compete in the duels.

As the session progressed into Group B, Maximilian Guenther emerged as the fastest driver, securing his place in the duels alongside Jake Dennis, who had previously won this event. However, Nick Cassidy’s hopes were dashed when his lap time was also deleted for a technical violation.

However, tensions rose after Wehrlein’s main rival for pole position emerged in the form of da Costa, who was consistently quick across all sectors. The Porsche duo were clearly in a league of their own, leaving competitors scrambling to keep pace.

Wehrlein’s strategy involved maximizing his energy management while pushing the limits of his car’s performance.

The semi-finals saw Wehrlein face off against Oliver Rowland from Nissan. Rowland had shown promise earlier in the session but ultimately made a critical mistake in the final sector that cost him valuable time.

Wehrlein capitalized on this error, advancing confidently into the final duel against da Costa. The stakes were high as both drivers knew that their performance would not only impact their individual standings but also reflect on Porsche’s dominance in the championship.

In the final showdown for pole position for Mexico City E-Prix 2025, da Costa initially appeared poised to take the lead setting quick times in both the first and third sectors. However, a costly mistake at the chicane disrupted his rhythm and allowed Wehrlein to snatch pole by a narrow margin of just one-tenth of a second.

The victory not only secured Wehrlein’s second consecutive pole position of the season but also marked his fourth career pole at this particular circuit—an impressive feat that underscored his mastery of the track.

Behind the dominant TAG Heuer Porsche duo, Jean-Eric Vergne from DS Penske secured third place on the grid after a solid qualifying performance. Vergne has been known for his consistency and experience in Formula E and was eager to capitalize on any opportunities during the race.

Oliver Rowland’s disappointment was palpable as he settled for fourth place despite showing early promise; he had hoped to challenge for pole but ultimately fell short.

Mitch Evans from Jaguar rounded out the top five, showcasing competitive speed but unable to match the pace set by the leading quartet. Maximilian Günther from DS Penske qualified sixth, while Jake Dennis from Andretti secured seventh place after a steady run through qualifying.

The eighth position went to Edoardo Mortara from Mahindra Racing, who managed to navigate through some tough competition and secure a spot in the top ten. Zane Maloney from Lola Yamaha ABT and Sam Bird from McLaren completed the top ten qualifiers.

As drivers prepare for race day on January 12, 2025, all eyes are on Pascal Wehrlein and his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa as they look to convert their front-row lockout into a commanding performance at the Mexico City E-Prix 2025.

The race promises to be an exciting continuation of what has already been an action-packed season filled with fierce competition and strategic battles.
