Max Verstappen advances from 17th to win chaotic 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has solidified his position as one of the most formidable drivers in Formula 1 history following a phenomenal recovery drive from 17th place on the grid to claim victory at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Starting from an astonishing 17th place on the grid due to a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his engine quota, Verstappen showcased his exceptional driving skills and strategic acumen in a race filled with drama, unpredictable weather conditions, and close competition.

This win not only marked his first since June but also brought him significantly closer to securing his fourth world championship title, leaving his closest rival, Lando Norris of McLaren, with a daunting 62-point deficit.

The 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix race began under chaotic circumstances even before the green lights illuminated the track. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll spun off during the formation lap leading to confusion regarding the start procedure.

As pole-sitter Lando Norris led several cars away from the grid, others remained stationary resulting in potential investigations for Norris, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson for their roles in what was deemed an improper start.

When the race finally commenced, it was Russell who capitalized on the situation with a strong launch taking the lead from Norris while Max Verstappen began his ascent through the field.

The Red Bull driver’s early progress was nothing short of extraordinary. By the end of the first lap, he had already moved up to 11th place as his aggressive yet calculated overtaking maneuvers allowed him to reach sixth position by lap 12.

Meanwhile, George Russell had taken control of the race, battling fiercely with Norris for supremacy as rain began to fall intermittently, complicating tyre strategies for all teams involved.

As conditions worsened around one-third into the race, a Virtual Safety Car was deployed following a spin by Nico Hülkenberg. This prompted many teams to pit for fresh tires, but Verstappen and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon chose to remain on track.

This decision proved pivotal when a full safety car was later introduced following Franco Colapinto’s crash on lap 33. The timing allowed Verstappen to switch to new tires without losing significant track position.

When racing resumed after the red flag caused by Colapinto’s incident, Ocon found himself leading with Verstappen right behind him. The restart was crucial as the reigning world champion seized the moment and executed a bold move on Ocon right out of Turn One on lap 43, taking over the lead decisively.

From that point onward, Max Verstappen demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the best in wet conditions, pulling away from Ocon and clocking in a series of fastest laps.

However, the already chaotic 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix race continued with its fair share of incidents as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz crashed into barriers shortly after another safety car period was initiated due to worsening weather conditions. This further complicated matters for drivers still struggling to maintain grip on slick tires in treacherous conditions.

However, Verstappen remained unperturbed; he extended his lead significantly and crossed the finish line with an impressive margin of 19.477 seconds ahead of Ocon.

Ocon’s second-place finish alongside teammate Pierre Gasly in third marked a remarkable day for Alpine, who celebrated a double podium that propelled them from ninth to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship standings.

George Russell managed to secure fourth place for Mercedes after a competitive outing but faced scrutiny regarding tire pressures during a grid formation incident that may lead to penalties post-race.

Charles Leclerc finished fifth for Ferrari, while Norris’s hopes of challenging for the championship were dashed as he dropped from pole position to finish sixth after misjudging several key moments during the race.

Oscar Piastri initially finished seventh but received a ten-second time penalty for colliding with Lawson during an intense battle on track, which ultimately demoted him to eighth place. Visa Cash App RB’s Yuki Tsunoda capitalized on Piastri’s misfortune to claim seventh place for RB Racing.

Lewis Hamilton managed to salvage some points by finishing tenth after starting further down the grid and navigating through multiple challenges throughout the race.

The chaotic nature of the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix will be remembered not only for Max Verstappen’s incredible drive but also for how it reshaped the championship landscape with just three races remaining in the season.

With 86 points still available and Verstappen holding a commanding lead over Norris, it is clear that unless something drastic occurs in upcoming races—including Las Vegas—Verstappen is poised to clinch yet another title.
