Maserati MSG has officially confirmed its commitment to the upcoming ABB FIA Formula E GEN4 era, which is set to commence in the 2026/27 season.
The announcement solidifies the Italian automotive brand position as the fifth manufacturer to join the GEN4 framework, following Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche, and Lola.
Maserati MSG’s involvement in the all-electric series will extend through at least the 2029/30 season, marking a significant step in its ongoing journey within the electric racing landscape.
The Formula E GEN4 era promises to introduce groundbreaking technological advancements that will redefine the parameters of electric racing. Notable features of the new regulations include a power output of up to 600kW and an impressive regenerative braking capacity of 700kW.
These enhancements are designed to foster faster and more energy-efficient racing, aligning with Maserati MSG’s intent to leverage its participation in Formula E as a platform for developing and integrating cutting-edge technology into its road vehicles.
The outfit’s journey in Formula E began with its return to international single-seater competition in Season 9 after a hiatus of 62 years. Since then, the brand has made remarkable strides, achieving six podium finishes, two pole positions, and two race victories within just two seasons.
These achievements highlight Maserati’s competitive spirit and dedication to excellence in electric racing. The brand’s recent successes include wins by driver Maximilian Guenther at both the Jakarta and Tokyo E-Prix events.
The announcement comes at a time when many automotive manufacturers are navigating challenges within the market. Maserati has faced challenges recently, with global vehicle sales dropping significantly and an adjusted operating loss reported for the first half of 2024.
However, its partnership with Monaco Sports Group (MSG) plays a pivotal role in its operations within Formula E. MSG operates similarly to how Venturi managed Mercedes powertrains in previous seasons, allowing Maserati access to proven technical expertise while maintaining a lean operational budget.
Despite facing financial challenges earlier this year, including workforce reductions at its Modena plant, Maserati MSG’s leadership remains committed to maximizing its presence in motorsport as part of its broader strategy.
“We are extremely proud to continue our commitment to as prestigious and innovative a platform as Formula E,“ Maserati’s CEO Santo Ficili said.
“For this brand, the bond between the track and the road is unbreakable and the evolution of the single-seaters shows how many possibilities for development electric mobility holds.
“We will continue to draw major developments from the races in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, to transfer them into our 100% electric range that now consists of the Grecale Folgore SUV, the iconic GranTurismo Folgore and the GranCabrio Folgore convertible.”
The Italian manufacturer will continue using powertrains produced by parent company Stellantis, making the parent company, officially, an OEM in the new Formula E GEN4 era, which will be introduced in the latter stages of 2026.
“We are delighted to announce Stellantis Motorsport’s commitment to Maserati MSG in the upcoming Formula E Gen4,“ Senior Vice President of Stellantis Motorsports Jean-Marc Finot said.
“For over 10 years, we have been developing high-efficiency powertrains for DS and Maserati, and will continue to work on these road-relevant technologies in as competitive and promising a championship as Formula E.“
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed Maserati MSG’s ongoing involvement as a testament to the championship’s relevance in shaping the future of electric mobility.
“We are thrilled to confirm Maserati’s continued commitment to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship by registering for the GEN4 era, alongside Stellantis Motorsport,“ said Dodds.
“They have both been a valuable part of our championship, and have demonstrated remarkable performances on track, while driving forward electric vehicle technology that benefits everyday road users.
“Their ongoing involvement alongside other global OEMs such as Nissan, Jaguar, Porsche and Lola, is a testament to Formula E’s status as a competitive and relevant platform for the future of electric mobility.
“We can’t wait to see the House of Trident continue its journey with Formula E and build into a new era of enhanced performance, innovation and on track action.“
There are discussions within Stellantis regarding potential engagements with additional brands under its umbrella for future seasons in Formula E. While details remain tentative, it is clear the company is keen on expanding its footprint in this burgeoning motorsport discipline.
As Maserati MSG prepares for GEN4, it will be hoping the announcement will boost its performance following a series of disappointing results. Maximilian Günther took a single victory in the last two seasons, as the team finished sixth in the Teams’ Championship.
However, Günther switched DS Penske and the team boasts a brand-new line-up with Season 8 champion Stoffel Vandoorne and Jake Hughes.
