Six weeks after having surgery on his right arm in the United States, six-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has been granted the all-clear to start physiotherapy, his Repsol Honda team announced on Friday.
The 29-year-old injured his arm in a collision at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2020, and even though he was able to compete again in April of the following year and win three races, his injury didn’t completely heal.
Although the Honda rider hasn’t yet established a target date for his comeback to competition, getting the go-ahead to advance to the next phase of his recovery is a significant step forward on the lengthy road to health.
Early in June, Marquez underwent surgery to have his right humerus bone broken and rotated once more in order to correct a 30-degree misalignment brought on by his initial 2020 repair and subsequent failed attempt to return to play only five days later. This action started a chain of events that, two years later, are still having an impact on his career and health.
“We have taken an important step in the recovery process,” Marquez said in a statement on the team’s website. “In this second check-up, the doctors have confirmed that the humerus is consolidating correctly, with this we can start physiotherapy on the right arm and cardio training.”
“I am very excited to be able to recover mobility in my arm to continue advancing the recovery process and I want to thank the entire medical team for their treatment and attention.”
His most recent procedure was performed in Minnesota at the famed Mayo Clinic, as opposed to Spain, where his previous operations had been performed.
The division’s head of shoulder and elbow surgery, Dr. Sanchez Sotelo, reaffirmed that he was pleased with Marquez’s improvement and expressed hope that he will make further progress in the coming weeks.
“A good clinical and radiological evolution has been confirmed that allows progress in the mobility and strength recovery program of the right arm,” said the surgeon. “The patient will undergo a new review within the next six weeks.”
