Charles Leclerc set the fastest time for Ferrari in the second practice of Azerbaijan Grand Prix ahead of the Red Bulls.
Leclerc moved to the top with a time of 1:43.224 running on the softs, giving him a two-tenths of a second lead over Sergio Perez of Red Bull. Max Verstappen finished third overall because teammate Sergio Perez interfered with his first attempt.
Perez slid off the track and into the Turn 15 escape road, resulting in yellow flags, forcing Verstappen and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to pull back.
While Verstappen had another go and finished third, Sainz finished fifth after electing not to complete another lap, his fastest time coming on the Medium tyres.
Alpine’s Fernando Alonso finished fourth overall, with the team displaying good straight-line speed through the lap’s throttle-heavy final sector. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda finished sixth and eighth, respectively, as Mercedes driver George Russell came in between them in seventh.
Mercedes struggled on both short and long runs, and on various tyre compounds, with Lewis Hamilton expressing his surprise at being two seconds behind Leclerc in the early laps on Mediums. After the Soft tyre runs, Hamilton finished 12th overall, 1.6 seconds behind Leclerc.
Esteban Ocon finished ninth, ensuring that both Alpines finished in the top ten slots, while Lando Norris rounded out the top ten as he finished a hundredth of a second ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Aston Martin.
Lance Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo finished 13th and 14th, ahead of the Alfa Romeo drivers, who finished 15th and 16th, With Bottas ahead of Zhou Guanyu.
Kevin Magnussen placed 17th for Haas, with Mick Schumacher 19th, while Alexander Albon’s Williams was hampered by a peculiar event during the session.
Albon missed the right-hand bend at Turn 17 and hit the wall with the right-hand side of the car, forcing him to return to the garage for repairs. His teammate Nicholas Latifi finished last.
