As part of Lamborghini’s upcoming LMDh program with Iron Lynx, former Formula 1 driver Daniil Kvyat has been named a factory driver and will race for the Italian manufacturer in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The 28-year old, who is now driving for Prema Racing in the FIA WEC’s LMP2 class, will be a crucial part of the development of the Lamborghini LMDh prototype which will make its racing debut next year.
The prototype is being developed with chassis partner Ligier as both the FIA WEC and IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup events in 2024 are anticipated to feature the car.
“We are thrilled to have Daniil onboard,” said Andrea Piccini, Iron Lynx Team Principal and CEO. “The speed he showed during his time in F1 is going to be a huge asset to the team.
“Not only that, but a podium at Sebring on his FIA WEC debut made quite the impression and bodes well for his future in endurance racing.
“We are looking forward to testing the LMDh car with him this season before the real challenge begins in 2024.”
Kvyat will be racing in both the WEC and IMSA starting in 2024, alongside former F1 rival Romain Grosjean, Andrea Calderelli and Mirko Bortolotti, his teammate in the Prema World Endurance Championship LMP2.
“I am very happy to have joined Lamborghini Squadra Corse, it is a great honour for me,” Kvyat said. “Lamborghini is a very well-known Italian brand with a great history in the automotive world and, having grown up in Italy, this is an additional source of pride for me.”
“We hope to achieve many goals together, I am thankful for their trust in me and I look forward to starting work with the Lamborghini Iron Lynx Team on the LMDh project this year.”
Given his junior racing background, Kvyat is anticipated to race under an Italian license in the WEC as a “neutral” driver in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict.
Kvyat marks the fourth driver to be officially confirmed for the Lamborghini Iron Lynx LMDh program after Romain Grosjean, Mirko Bortolotti, and Andrea Caldarelli were announced as the drivers for the program last year.
