Jerez MotoGP 2025: Alex Marquez dominates Friday Practice, breaks lap record

Full Jerez MotoGP 2025 Friday Practice Results – Alex Marquez maintained his perfect form in the afternoon session breaking the all-time lap record at Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto.

The second practice for Spanish MotoGP was marked by high tension and multiple incidents that set the stage for a fiercely competitive race weekend, with riders pushing the limits of their machines and their own abilities.

Alex Marquez, representing BK8 Gresini Racing on the Ducati Desmosedici GP24, was the headline act of the Jerez MotoGP 2025 Friday practice. Despite suffering a significant crash at Turn 5 – the fast Sito Pons corner – early in the session, he demonstrated remarkable composure and determination.

The incident which saw his Ducati launched into the air fence and forced a red flag stoppage for over ten minutes could have derailed his momentum. However, after receiving medical attention for the pain caused by gravel in the run-off area Marquez returned to the track undeterred.

In a display of both physical and mental resilience he set a blistering lap time of 1:35.991 not only topping the session but also breaking the previous all-time lap record at Jerez which had been held by Francesco Bagnaia since 2024.

The dominance of Ducati machinery was a defining feature of the afternoon. Lenovo Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia was Alex Marquez’s closest challenger with his lap of 1:36.094 falling 0.103 seconds adrift, underlining the razor-thin margins at the top and the Italian’s continued prowess at Jerez.

Meanwhile, Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team’s Franco Morbidelli secured third position with a time of 1:36.153, just 0.162 seconds off the pace. His ability to extract maximum performance from the Ducati GP24 in the critical closing stages of practice was pivotal in cementing his place among the frontrunners.

Marc Marquez, six-time MotoGP World Champion and elder brother to Alex, finished fourth with a 1:36.258. However Marc’s session was not without incident; a moment at Turn 6 cost him valuable time and potentially a shot at the fastest lap.

Nevertheless, his recovery to secure a top-four finish highlighted his experience and racecraft ensuring both Marquez brothers featured prominently in the session’s narrative.

Breaking the Ducati stranglehold at the top, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo delivered a spirited performance to claim fifth. The 2021 World Champion faced his own challenges including a crash at the final corner while on a potentially session-topping lap.

His subsequent disagreement with marshals about re-entering the pit lane, followed by a determined return to the track to improve his time, showcased both his competitiveness and tenacity.

Quartararo’s best lap of 1:36.419 placed him 0.428 seconds behind the leader, signaling Yamaha’s continued efforts to close the gap to Ducati.

Rookie sensation Fermin Aldeguer, riding for BK8 Gresini Racing, impressed on home soil by finishing sixth. His lap of 1:36.508, just over half a second off the top, secured him direct entry into Q2 for qualifying.

Castrol Honda LCR’s Johann Zarco was the top Honda rider in seventh. The Frenchman’s 1:36.535 lap demonstrated the manufacturer’s incremental progress as he managed to edge out several rivals despite the RC213V’s well-documented struggles with straight-line performance.

Red Bull KTM Factory’s Pedro Acosta continued his impressive run by finishing eighth. Acosta who set a personal best late in the session was a bright spot for KTM, who otherwise found themselves outside the top ten with their other riders.

Fabio Di Giannantonio(Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) and Joan Mir(Honda HRC Castrol) rounded out the top ten, both securing crucial Q2 spots.

The rest of the field faced a mix of fortunes. Brad Binder narrowly missed out on a top-ten spot by just 0.055 seconds while Maverick Vinales who had been KTM’s standout in previous rounds struggled to replicate that form at Jerez, finishing outside the top ten.

Jack Miller, Alex Rins and Marco Bezzecchi also found themselves further down the order each grappling with setup challenges and traffic during their flying laps.

Aleix Espargaro returning as a Honda wildcard and reportedly testing a new engine finished 21st. His position was somewhat flattered by a late run on fresh tires but his feedback and experience are expected to be invaluable for Honda’s ongoing development efforts.

Augusto Fernandez and Lorenzo Savadori, both test riders completed the session in the lower reaches of the timesheets, focusing primarily on development work rather than outright pace.
