Jean Todt’s disappointment over Ferrari – ‘Never had any contact after leaving FIA’

Jean Todts disappointment Ferrari

Jean Todt’s disappointment stems from lack of communication and recognition from Ferrari since his departure as FIA president in 2021.

Todt’s tenure at the iconic racing team is celebrated as one of the most successful periods in the team’s history, yet his feelings of neglect have raised questions about the team’s appreciation for its past leaders.

Jean Todt’s disappointment with Ferrari was revealed in a candid interview with La Repubblica, where the Frenchman reflected on his journey with the Scuderia – which began in 1993 when he took over a team that he described as a “castle in ruins.”

At that time Ferrari was struggling both technically and competitively. The wind tunnel was outdated, and the overall structure of the team was disorganized.

It was under the 78-year old’s leadership the Maranello-based outfit transformed into a dominant force in Formula 1, securing several championships and establishing a legacy that remains influential today.

Jean Todt’s disappointment stems primarily from what he perceives as a failure by Ferrari to acknowledge his contributions to the team’s success during his presidency, revealing a deep sense of perplexity regarding the team’s current approach to its historical figures.

“Since I left I have spoken to some members of the Ferrari team, but since I left the FIA I have never had any contact again,” Todt said. “I must say that I was very perplexed given how much time I dedicated to this incredible company and how many results we have achieved.“

“When I arrived in 1993 there was a castle in ruins, the design area in England, an old and unusable wind tunnel at the headquarters. But little by little we built a jewel. Alone I would not have done anything, I was good at forming and maintaining a team for years, making it a dream team.

“The 14 championships won remain in the books. It was the most successful period in the history of Ferrari.“

During his time at Ferrari, Todt oversaw an era characterized by unprecedented success. Under his guidance, the team won 14 championships—eight Constructors’ Championships and six Drivers’ Championships—largely thanks to the talents of legendary driver Michael Schumacher.

The partnership between Todt and Schumacher is often cited as one of the most successful collaborations in sports history. Together with key personnel such as Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, they built a cohesive unit that not only achieved remarkable results but also fostered a culture of excellence within the team.

Jean Todt later ran for the FIA presidency in 2009 and took over the role from Max Mosley. His tenure as FIA president lasted for over a decade, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping Formula 1’s regulatory landscape and fostering relationships between teams and governing bodies.

Todt retired from the role in December 2021, after which Mohammed Ben Sulayem took over.
