IMSA 2025 Sebring 12 Hours: Porsche Penske claims win with a dominant 1-2 finish

Porsche Penske 2025 Sebring 12 Hours 1-2 finish

In a stunning display of dominance Porsche Penske Motorsport secured a remarkable 1-2 finish at the 73rd Mobil 1 2025 Sebring 12 Hours with Felipe Nasr leading the charge in the No. 7 Porsche 963.

The victory marks a historic achievement for the team as they became one of the few in history to win both the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring in the same year.

The 2025 Sebring 12 Hours, which took place on March 15, 2025, saw the No. 7 Porsche 963 driven by Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, and Laurens Vanthoor, cross the finish line just 2.239 seconds ahead of their teammates in the No. 6 Porsche, piloted by Mathieu Jaminet, Matt Campbell, and Kévin Estre.

This victory not only solidified Porsche Penske Motorsport’s dominance in the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship but also etched their names in the annals of endurance racing history.

The 12-hour endurance classic, known for its grueling nature and challenging track conditions, saw five different manufacturers lead at various stages. However, it was Porsche Penske that emerged victorious, showcasing their superior strategy, impeccable execution, and unwavering determination.

Two powerhouses battle for 2025 Sebring 12 Hours honours

The No. 7 Porsche 963 led for an impressive 166 of the 353 laps completed during the 2025 Sebring 12 Hours event. Their dominance was challenged only by the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R which managed to lead for 147 laps.

The competition intensified as the sun set over the iconic Sebring International Raceway. With just two hours remaining, Nick Tandy found himself locked in a fierce battle with Frederik Vesti in the No. 31 Cadillac.

The two GTP-class entries exchanged the lead multiple times, however, it was during the penultimate pit stops that the Porsche Penske Motorsport team’s strategy paid off, allowing the No. 7 Porsche to maintain its lead.

Meanwhile, Mathieu Jaminet, freshly installed in the No. 6 Porsche, made a decisive move in the final hours to pass Earl Bamber for second place. This maneuver secured the Porsche Penske Motorsport 1-2 finish at the 2025 Sebring 12 Hours.

For Nick Tandy, this victory held special significance. The 40-year-old British driver became the first in history to achieve the “Big Six” of endurance racing, having now conquered the 24-hour races at Le Mans, Daytona, Spa, and Nürburgring, as well as Petit Le Mans and the 2025 Sebring 12 Hours.

Meanwhile, the No. 93 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 driven by Nick Yelloly, Renger van der Zande and Alex Palou managed to secure the final podium position.

The No. 31 Whelen Cadillac driven by Earl Bamber, Jack Aitken, and Frederik Vesti could only manage fourth place after a mix of poor strategy and power issues.

BMW M Team RLL didn’t get the 50th Anniversary gift that they had hoped for after a fifth-place finish for the No. 25 BMW of Marco Wittmann, Sheldon van der Linde, and Robin Frijns while the sister No. 24 BMW finished 31 laps down the overall winner.

The 2025 Sebring 12 Hours also saw strong performances from other Porsche customer teams after Proton Competition finished in sixth place overall, while JDC-Miller MotorSports crossed the finish line in eighth position with their Porsche 963.

Notable was the debut of Porsche factory driver Nico Müller in the No. 85 car, who put in some impressive stints despite being new to the Porsche 963 platform.

Meanwhile, the Aston Martin Valkyrie showed promising performance in its second competitive outing. Despite the punishing bumps of Sebring, worlds apart from the smooth surface of Lusail International Circuit where it debuted just two weeks earlier, the Valkyrie managed to finish ninth overall.

Drivers Ross Gunn, Roman De Angelis, and Alex Riberas brought the car home two laps down, a respectable result considering the challenging nature of the Sebring circuit.

However, the Lamborghini SC63, making its second appearance in the United States, struggled and was the first GTP-class vehicle to retire.

Driven by Mirko Bortolotti, Daniil Kvyat, and Romain Grosjean, the #63 Lamborghini completed only 256 laps before an exhaust problem caused damage to the floor, forcing their early exit.
