Francesco Bagnaia wins the 2024 Indonesian MotoGP Sprint race to half Jorge Martin’s championship lead after the latter crashes out on the first-lap.
The gripping 13-lap race held at the spectacular Mandalika International Street Circuit was marked by unexpected twists and intense competition among the top riders, setting the stage for a dramatic title fight as the season approaches its conclusion.
The win marked Bagnaia’s return to form after crashing out of last weekend’s race at Misano and added another twist to the ongoing championship battle, particularly following a dramatic first-lap crash involving Jorge Martin, the championship leader.
As the lights went out, Pramac’s Jorge Martin made an explosive start from pole position and surged ahead, establishing an early lead as he navigated the first corners with precision.
Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia started from fourth on the grid and deftly maneuvered his way into second place off the line, poised to take advantage of any opportunity that arose.
Martin’s pace was impressive and it seemed like he might pull away from the pack especially after clocking a remarkable time during qualifying. However, the excitement quickly turned into disappointment when he lost control of his bike and tumbled at Turn 16 on the very first lap.

Martin’s low-side fall shaped the outcome of the race after turning out to be a huge advantage to Bagnaia who took over the lead and never looked back all the way.
Meanwhile behind him there was a close battle for positions as VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi initially posed a threat as he moved into second place after Martin’s crash. However, his race also took a turn to the worst when he outbraked himself at Turn 10 on lap seven, almost colliding with Bagnaia and ultimately dropping back in positions.
The close call left Bagnaia’s factory Ducati teammate Enea Bastianini battling with six-time world champion Marc Marquez, who had made a stunning recovery from 12th on the grid to challenge for podium positions.
Marquez’s experience shone through as he climbed up the ranks to overtake his stablemate for second , showcasing his skills despite crashing twice during qualifying earlier that day.
However, Bastianini retaliated against his replacement at Ducati with just a few laps remaining and executed a brilliant overtaking maneuver at Turn 10 on lap 12, moving into second place and putting pressure on Bagnaia ahead of him.
The final laps were tense as Bastianini pushed hard to catch his teammate and had managed to reduce the lead to just 0.107 seconds but fell short by the time they crossed the finish line, ultimately settling for second.
Marquez finished third after a valiant effort but could not keep pace with the two Ducatis ahead of him during the closing stages of the race. His podium finish marked another solid performance in what has been a remarkable season for him so far.
Marco Bezzecchi managed to recover to fourth place after his earlier struggles, while Franco Morbidelli rounded out a remarkable top five for Ducati. Pedro Acosta finished sixth in what was another commendable outing for the rookie rider from Tech3 GASGAS.
Maverick Vinales and Johann Zarco followed closely behind in seventh and eighth places respectively, with Fabio Di Giannantonio securing ninth position for VR46 Racing Team. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin’s comeback efforts saw him finish in tenth place after remounting from his crash; however, this left him outside the points.
KTM’s Jack Miller finished in 11th while Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo was forced backwards after contact with Morbidelli and finished 12th, ahead of Brad Binder in 13th.
Alex Marquez recovered after a horrible crash in qualifying to take 14th, with Yamaha’s Alex Rins closely behind in 15th. Aleix Espargaro’s difficult weekend continued as he could only manage 16th in the Sprint race, ahead of Honda duo Takaaki Nakagami in 17th and Luca Marini in 18th.
Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez crashed at the end of Lap 1 but rejoined and finished 19th and last of the finishers.
