The first day of Formula E pre-season test at the Circuito de Jarama in Madrid concluded with Antonio Felix da Costa on top as teams and drivers prepare for Season 11.
This year’s testing is particularly noteworthy as it introduces the Gen3 EVO cars which promises to boost the excitement and competitiveness of the all-electric racing series.
The Formula E pre-season test sessions were originally scheduled to take place at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, but severe flooding in the region forced a last-minute relocation to Circuito de Jarama. The series organization managed this logistical challenge with remarkable efficiency, ensuring that all teams could participate despite the circumstances.
Antonio Felix da Costa emerged as the standout performer on the opening day, clocking a blistering lap time of 1:29.220 in his Porsche after completing a total of 30 laps during the session.
This impressive feat not only showcased his driving prowess but also highlighted the capabilities of the new Gen3 EVO car, which is designed to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.82 seconds—30% faster than current Formula 1 cars.
Following Da Costa on the timesheets was Jake Dennis, who drove for Andretti and secured second place with a commendable performance. Maximilian Günther, now with DS Penske after a successful stint with Maserati, rounded out the top three.
Edoardo Mortara finished fourth in his Mahindra car, indicating that he is looking to bounce back after a challenging previous season. Stoffel Vandoorne, another driver making waves in his new Maserati MSG Racing machine, took fifth place. Vandoorne’s move from Mercedes to Maserati has generated considerable interest, and his performance on day one suggests he is adapting well to his new environment.
The sixth and seventh positions were occupied by Nico Müller and Jake Hughes, respectively. Müller transitioned from ABT to Andretti for Season 11, while Hughes is another newcomer at Maserati.
Reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein found himself in eighth place, a position that may not reflect his usual competitiveness but serves as a reminder of how early testing can be unpredictable.
Jean-Eric Vergne and Lucas di Grassi completed the top ten, both showcasing their experience and skill in their respective cars. Vergne’s performance with DS Penske continues to build on his legacy as one of Formula E’s most accomplished drivers, while di Grassi’s debut with Lola Yamaha ABT has generated excitement among fans.
The absence of drivers from Jaguar and Nissan was notable during the Formula E pre-season test session after both teams were handed penalties due to budget cap regulations breaches. Drivers such as Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy had to watch from the sidelines but are expected to return for subsequent sessions.
As for rookies in Season 11, Taylor Barnard led the newcomers by finishing in 12th place. Although he has prior experience from last season as a substitute driver for NEOM McLaren, this testing session provided him with valuable insights into competing at this level consistently.
Zane Maloney and David Beckmann also participated, with Maloney finishing in sixteenth position while Beckmann’s role as a test driver for Kiro Race Co adds an intriguing dynamic to their lineup.
