The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has secured its place in the MotoGP calendar for an extended period with a new contract ensuring that the iconic venue will host races until 2031.
The announcement comes as a significant boost for both the local economy and the passionate fanbase that has supported MotoGP since its inception at this circuit in 1992.
The Catalan Grand Prix which is traditionally held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a staple of the MotoGP calendar and is renowned for its thrilling races and vibrant atmosphere, drawing fans from around the globe to experience high-octane motorcycle racing in one of Europe’s most culturally rich cities.
The decision to extend the contract was celebrated by various stakeholders including Miquel Sàmper – the Minister of Business and Labour of the Government of Catalonia.
In a statement, Sàmper remarked on the significance of having a venue like the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya remain on the MotoGP calendar, especially considering its long-standing history and the economic benefits it brings to the area.
“We celebrate this deal, which strengthens Catalonia’s connection to motor racing, particularly the Grand Prix, which has been held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since 1992, over 30 years ago,” he said.
“Securing the MotoGP Grand Prix until 2031 is excellent news for Catalonia’s reputation as a host of premier international sporting events. In an increasingly internationalized and competitive environment, Catalonia’s ability to maintain a circuit in such a stable manner is an achievement to be proud of.”
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, which manages MotoGP rights, was pleased to continue racing at Barcelona.
“We’re very happy to pen this new agreement with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya,” said Ezpeleta in a statement.
“They never fail to deliver a world-class fan weekend, we always have impressive attendance figures, and the track is so well connected to Barcelona, one of the world’s most culturally relevant cities.
“This is a winning combination for us and we’re excited to continue racing there.”
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has hosted 34 Grands Prix since its debut, making it one of the most frequented venues on the MotoGP calendar. Its challenging layout features a mix of fast straights and technical corners that test both rider skill and machine performance.
Over the years, it has become a favorite among riders and teams due to its unique characteristics and the passionate support from local fans. The extension of this contract allows MotoGP to continue building on the venue’s history while also promising exciting developments in future races.
As part of this ongoing relationship, plans are already underway for the next Catalan Grand Prix, scheduled from September 5 to 7, 2025. Fans can expect an exhilarating weekend filled with not only MotoGP races but also competitions across all classes including Moto2, Moto3, and MotoE.
