The world of motorcycle racing is poised for an exhilarating new chapter as Balaton Park has been officially confirmed to feature on the 2025 MotoGP calendar.
This exciting development marks a remarkable return for Hungary to the elite level of motorcycle racing, having last hosted a Grand Prix event in 1992.
The provisional dates for this landmark event are set for August 22-24, 2025, promising to attract fans from across the globe to witness high-speed action against the stunning backdrop of Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe.
Balaton Park, located in western Hungary, is currently undergoing extensive upgrades to ensure it meets the stringent requirements necessary for hosting MotoGP events. The circuit, which measures approximately 4.081 kilometers, will see changes aimed at improving both safety and the overall spectator experience.
These upgrades include improvements to track layout and infrastructure, designed to accommodate large crowds and provide an unforgettable experience for fans and riders alike.
The inclusion of Balaton Park on the 2025 MotoGP calendar is not just a victory for motorsport enthusiasts but also a testament to Hungary’s growing reputation as a key player in international motorsport.
The venue will also host races for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), further solidifying the nation’s status as a premier motorsport destination.
“We’re very happy to announce that Balaton Park will be on the 2025 MotoGP calendar and WorldSBK,” said Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. “The circuit is in a spectacular location and will be a fantastic destination for fans to come and see the world’s most exciting sport in action.
“Work is under way to get the venue ready for its historic debut on the calendar, adding another chapter to Hungary’s history in motorcycle grand prix racing, and we’re very much looking forward to returning to a key market in central Europe.”
The Hungarian Motorsport Association has long dreamed of this moment with its president Henrik Hermann reflecting on the journey that has led to this announcement.
“When you are on your way to the finish line, every milestone on the way is an important confirmation of the right direction,” Hermann said.
“Back in 2004, as President of the Hungarian Motorsport Association, I had the opportunity to meet Dorna and dream of the return of motorcycle Grand Prix racing in Hungary, which has since become known as MotoGP, the most exciting motorsport event in the world.
“This goal has been on the horizon several times, unfortunately there have been more and more turns on the horizon, but one thing is for sure, we have never been so close and under such clear skies.
“Our eyes are smiling under our helmets at the last turn before the finish line and we are concentrating all our energy on waving the chequered in front of the roaring crowd so we Hungarians can enjoy that feeling in our home country as well.”
The upgrades planned for Balaton Park are comprehensive and aim to elevate the venue to FIM Grade A standards required for hosting MotoGP events. Key modifications include introducing tighter radius turns at specific points on the track to enhance safety while maintaining high-speed racing dynamics.
Additionally, a new chicane will be added at turn 11 to moderate speeds at the end of the back straight, creating more overtaking opportunities and adding excitement to race day.
The historical significance of this event cannot be overstated. Hungary has produced notable talents in motorcycle racing, including Gábor Talmácsi, who made history by becoming the first Hungarian MotoGP World Champion when he SECURED the 125cc title in 2007.
As preparations continue for this historic event, local authorities and organizations are working diligently to ensure that all aspects of fan experience are considered. This includes enhancing infrastructure such as parking facilities, hospitality services, and spectator amenities that will cater to both local and international fans attending the races.
Dorna is expected to announce the full 2025 MotoGP calendar in due course as Balaton Park marks the newest venue to make its return after Brno circuit was confirmed last month.
