Francesco Bagnaia kept his title hopes alive with a stunning victory in the Solidarity Barcelona MotoGP sprint race to close in on championship leader Jorge Martin heading into the season finale on Sunday.
The Ducati Lenovo rider demonstrated his exceptional skill and determination as he crossed the finish line first, edging out his teammate Enea Bastianini who finished second while Martin secured third place.
The Solidarity Barcelona MotoGP Sprint race win marked Bagnaia’s seventh sprint victory of the season and was pivotal in narrowing the points gap between him and points leader Martin, setting the stage for an electrifying championship finale showdown on Sunday as the Italian aims to defend his title.
The sprint race began with Francesco Bagnaia starting from pole position after a strong qualifying performance and as the lights went out he made a perfect getaway, leading into Turn 1.
Meanwhile, Jorge Martin who started from fourth on the grid quickly maneuvered his way into second place showcasing his own racing acumen. However, it was Pecco’s Ducati teammate Enea Bastianini who made an impressive move from eighth on the grid to take the holeshot into Turn 1.
Martin briefly surged ahead of Bagnaia but was quickly challenged as the two-time champion retaliated under braking into the right-hander to overtake both Martin and Bastianini and reclaim his lead.
By lap three, Martin had overtaken Bastianini for second place, but their battle continued to draw attention as they jockeyed for position. Meanwhile, Bagnaia established a commanding lead, pulling away from the pack and demonstrating his exceptional pace.
By lap five, Pecco had created a buffer that allowed him to focus on maintaining his advantage while Martin and Bastianini locked in a tight battle for second place.
A possible Solidarity Barcelona MotoGP Sprint race win was critical for the leading Ducati duo in their championship bid with Martin needing to finish ahead of Bagnaia to maintain his 21-point lead in the overall standings while the latter aiming to close the gap.
In a dramatic turn of events during the final lap, Bastianini executed a well-timed maneuver to reclaim second place from Martin at Turn 5. This move ultimately secured valuable points for Bastianini and pushed Martin down to third place as they crossed the finish line.
Francesco Bagnaia won the Solidarity Barcelona MotoGP Sprint race by a margin of 0.942 seconds over Enea Bastianini, with Jorge Martin trailing by 1.270 seconds.
Behind the leading trio, Aleix Espargaro made a commendable effort on his Aprilia RS-GP, finishing fourth after battling back from a poor start that saw him drop to eighth early in the race. Gresini’s Alex Marquez finished fifth after struggling in the latter stages of the race following a promising start.
Pramac’s Franco Morbidelli and Gresini’s Marc Marquez finished sixth and seventh respectively, ahead of VR46 Ducati’s Marco Bezzecchi and KTM’s Brad Binder in eighth and ninth respectively as Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo rounded out the top ten.
Johann Zarco delivered Honda’s best result of the Sprint in 11th ahead of Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales who secured a dismal 12th despite topping final practice.
Joan Mir secured 13th ahead of Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez who made late overtakes on Luca Marini and Alex Rins, to take 14th. Takaaki Nakagami finished 17th place ahead of the returning Miguel Oliveira and KTM rider Jack Miller.
Augusto Fernandez finished down in 20th place to cap off a disastrous day for GasGas, as Ducati and Honda test riders Michele Pirro and Stefan Bradl closed out proceedings in 21st and 22nd.
