Aston Martin AMR25 makes track debut after digital unveiling

Aston Martin AMR25 track debut

The Aston Martin AMR25 made its track debut in Bahrain as preparations ramp up for the 2025 F1 season.

The shakedown event follows the digital unveiling of the actual AMR25 car on Sunday – featuring the new livery presented at the F1 75 launch event – which generated considerable excitement among fans and racing enthusiasts.

The Aston Martin AMR25 represents a substantial evolution from its predecessor, the AMR24, with a focus on creating a more drivable and predictable racing machine for drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.

The Bahrain International Circuit renowned for its challenging layout and high-speed corners provided an ideal setting for the Silverstone-based outfit to test the capabilities of their new challenger.

Lance Stroll – entering his ninth season in F1 and seventh with the team – was the first to take the wheel, followed by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso who is eager to contribute to the team’s resurgence in the competitive F1 landscape.

Aston Martin released a brief video showing the new challenger racing around the track.

The team’s objective is to improve upon last season’s performance, where they finished fifth in the constructors’ championship without securing a podium finish.

Aston Martin’s efforts to improve the AMR25’s performance are part of a broader strategy aimed at regaining competitiveness ahead of the significant regulatory changes set to take place in 2026 F1.

The team has highlighted the importance of learning from the experiences of the previous season and applying those lessons to create a more benign and predictable car.

This approach is reflected in the substantial changes made to the Aston Martin AMR25’s aerodynamic surfaces, with approximately 90% of these components being new compared to the AMR24.

The most visually striking design changes include the redesigned sidepods and unseen modifications to the floor which are intended to provide a more stable rear end and improve driver confidence.

More design features on actual Aston Martin AMR25

Initially, digital renders suggested a more conservative evolution from the previous model. However, the AMR25’s track debut in Bahrain revealed several unexpected design elements which highlight the team’s innovative approach to car design.

Notably, the car features a full-length shark fin along the engine cover, narrower sidepods at a more inclined angle, and larger vents on the hood.

There’s also a switch to the Ferrari-style Cobra winglets beside the halo, indicating the team’s willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of current F1 regulations to gain a competitive edge.

Aston Martin’s ambitions for the 2025 F1 season are tempered by the recognition of a highly competitive field. Team principal Andy Cowell highlighted the need for realistic expectations, acknowledging that the team faces stiff competition from the outset.

“I’m excited to get this season started and see the Aston Martin AMR25 hit the track tomorrow in Bahrain,” he said. “It’s the culmination of tremendous hard work and dedication at the AMR Technology Campus.

“We are all inspired by the DNA of Aston Martin and we have a relentless pursuit of excellence, both on and off the track.

“For this year’s car we’ve really taken on board the lessons and feedback from last season. We’ve focused on creating a more driveable car for Lance and Fernando and we’ve pushed hard to make it more benign.

“We expect it to be a tight and competitive field from the get-go in Australia, so we know it won’t be easy.”

Despite these challenges, Aston Martin remains optimistic about its potential for growth and improvement, particularly with the upcoming regulatory changes in 2026 F1 offering an opportunity for teams to reset and reposition themselves in the championship standings.

Cowell added: “Our aims are realistic with a view to how we can continually improve in all areas, especially as we, like all teams, approach a vital shake-up of the regulations in 2026.”

Bearman tests the Haas VF-25

Besides the Aston Martin AMR25’s shakedown run, Haas F1 Team has also been active in Bahrain conducting tests with their new car, the VF-25.

Rookie driver Oliver Bearman, who has already gained valuable experience with three F1 race starts in 2024, was behind the wheel during the test sessions after his teammate Esteban Ocon previously tested the VF-25 at Silverstone.

Haas’s involvement in pre-season testing underscores the intense preparation underway across the F1 grid as teams strive to optimize their cars ahead of the 2025 F1 season opener in Australia.

The Bahrain International Circuit will continue to be a focal point for F1 teams over the coming days as official pre-season testing commences on February 26. This period will provide crucial insights into the performance and reliability of the new cars, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming season.

The successful track debut of the Aston Martin AMR25 marks an important step for the team towards achieving their goals, which include regaining a competitive edge and positioning themselves for future success under the new regulations.
