Haas boss Guenther Steiner described Mick Schumacher’s challenge in taking on his new colleague Kevin Magnussen by saying ‘the air is thinner’ near the top n F1.
Kevin Magnussen could not keep his cool as he smiled off his face all weekend in Bahrain, not just because the removal of Nikita Mazepin rejuvenated his Formula One career, but also because Haas had the fourth fastest vehicle on the 2022 grid.
Despite his lack of testing ahead of his F1 comeback to the 2022 season start in Bahrain, German Schumacher battled to keep up with the Dane.
“Kevin was able to set insane times while I couldn’t, so I have to understand if it was me or the car,” Mick Schumacher said.
Guenther Steiner, on the other hand, claimed Schumacher was “near” to Magnussen in Bahrain.
“He’s in a good position now because he can analyse and look at what he can do better and then he’ll definitely be scoring points,” he added.
Schumacher is simply noticing that “the air is thinner” near the front of the grid compared to the back, according to Steiner.
Schumacher said: “It shouldn’t be too difficult to get the problems under control. There is still a lot of untapped potential in the car.”
Ralf Schumacher, Mick’s uncle, predicted that the young driver will face challenges early in his Formula One career.
“Mick has to stretch himself a bit now, but that’s just part of it,” said Ralf, the brother of Mick’s father Michael Schumacher.
“This is exactly what a young driver needs and so Mick needs to use it. In the end it was a bad weekend for him, but he will learn a lot from it.”
