Red Bull’s sister team currently known as Visa Cash App RB is set to rebrand itself as “Racing Bulls” for the 2025 F1 season.
This announcement was confirmed by team principal Laurent Mekies during the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, marking yet another chapter in a series of name changes that have characterized this team over recent years.
The new name aims to clarify the often-misunderstood abbreviation “RB” in Visa Cash App RB which has been a point of confusion among fans and commentators alike.
Historically, this team has undergone several transformations. Initially launched as Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2006, it rebranded to Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2020 to promote Red Bull’s fashion label.
In 2023, the team adopted the title Visa Cash App RB as part of a strategy to attract new sponsorships and enhance its marketability. However, the “RB” moniker did not resonate well with fans or media, leading to the decision to revert to a more straightforward name that reflects its identity.
“Our team is Visa Cash App Racing Bulls,” Mekies confirmed to Sky F1 when asked what the team will be called next year. “Not RB, Racing Bulls.”
In conjunction with the arrival of the new name, Visa Cash App RB is also focusing on improving its competitive performance on track. The team has continued struggling this season, currently ranking eighth in the constructors’ standings after the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix.
The team is yet to announce who will partner Yuki Tsunoda for 2025 F1 with Liam Lawson unconfirmed beyond the end of the year amid links with a Red Bull promotion.
“As much as there is noise outside of the team, what we are trying to do is make sure our drivers develop well enough in such a way they are becoming attractive for Red Bull Racing,” Mekies added.
“That’s what we are trying to achieve – so as a result when we start to hear rumours about them going elsewhere, it’s actually good news.”
Williams’ mid-season substitute Franco Colapinto has also been rumoured to be in contention for a switch to the Faenza-based squad – however, Mekies remained coy over the potential of such a switch.
“Regarding Franco, it’s natural that many teams are thinking about him,” he said. “As far as we are concerned, we are a team that is functioning as a young driver development [programme] and therefore our focus is on that.
“If and when there is an opportunity for other drivers to go to the bigger team, it’s only good news for this team.”
The formal confirmation of the new name will be included in the FIA’s official entry list for the 2025 F1 season. This will provide clarity for fans and stakeholders regarding Visa Cash App RB’s new identity moving forward.
