Carlos Sainz has officially been confirmed to drive for Williams Racing during the upcoming Abu Dhabi post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit.
This announcement marks a significant moment in Sainz’s career as he transitions from Ferrari, where he has spent several competitive seasons, to the historic British team. The test is scheduled for December 10, 2024, just a few days after the conclusion of the Formula 1 season.
Carlos Sainz’s move to Williams Racing comes on the heels of Ferrari’s decision to sign seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season, effectively pushing the Spaniard out of his seat.
The 30-year-old driver will partner with Alex Albon, forming what many believe to be one of the most formidable driver line-ups in the paddock. This partnership is expected to boost the team’s competitiveness as they seek to improve their performance in the coming seasons.
The opportunity for Carlos Sainz to participate in the Abu Dhabi post-season test is particularly noteworthy as it allows him to start building a relationship with his new team ahead of the 2025 season.
“This early opportunity allows both Carlos Sainz and Williams Racing to begin building their relationship together ahead of next term,” the team said via their official website.
“The Abu Dhabi post-season test session at Yas Marina Circuit will provide a valuable chance for the Spaniard to start integrating into his new team environment, when he drives the FW46 for the first time.”
The test will feature a mix of experienced drivers and young talents, with teams running two cars—one for tyre testing and another for developing future stars.
Similar situations have happened in the past where drivers have been granted early access to their new teams before officially joining them. Notable examples include Kimi Räikkönen testing for Alfa Romeo after leaving Ferrari in 2018 and Sebastian Vettel testing for Aston Martin after his departure from Ferrari in 2020.
Such arrangements highlight a collaborative spirit within the sport, allowing drivers to transition smoothly while also benefiting teams with valuable track data.
Carlos Sainz’s confirmation comes after extensive negotiations between him and various teams within the paddock. His signing is seen as a strategic move by Williams Racing, who are looking to rebuild their reputation and competitiveness following several challenging seasons.
Meanwhile, Hamilton will not be joining Ferrari early in Abu Dhabi post-season testing as he is scheduled to take part in prearranged farewell activities with Mercedes.
