2024 Malaysian MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia dominates Friday practice as Martin crashes

Francesco Bagnaia topped the opening day of the 2024 Malaysian MotoGP at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit firmly establishing himself as a serious contender for the championship.

The Ducati Lenovo Team rider topped both practice sessions on Friday, signaling his intent to challenge for victory in a crucial weekend that could define the championship race.

Bagnaia’s fastest lap in the second practice session was an impressive 1:57.679, which not only secured him the top spot but also sent a clear message to his rivals, particularly Jorge Martin, who is currently leading the championship standings.

The first practice for the 2024 Malaysian MotoGP kicked off under hot and humid conditions typical of Malaysia, where riders faced a challenging track that demanded both speed and precision.

Bagnaia set the tone early on, clocking a time of 1:58.795, which placed him at the top of the timesheets ahead of Maverick Viñales and Marco Bezzecchi.

The session was marked by intense competition and a few incidents, including crashes from Brad Binder and Aleix Espargaro within the first fifteen minutes. Despite these setbacks, Bagnaia maintained his composure and focused on refining his race pace and tire management strategies.

As the afternoon practice commenced, Bagnaia continued to demonstrate his prowess. After initially struggling to find his rhythm, he made significant adjustments to his setup and switched from hard to medium rear tires.

This strategic decision paid off as he began to improve his lap times dramatically. The final moments of the session were particularly thrilling as with just minutes remaining, Bagnaia unleashed a blistering lap that not only secured him first place but also highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.

Jorge Martin, riding for Prima Pramac Racing, was a formidable competitor throughout both sessions. He initially led the second practice with a time of 1:57.729 before suffering a crash at Turn 1 while attempting to improve further.

Fortunately, he emerged unscathed but was left with little time to recover and make another attempt at bettering his time. Despite this setback, Martin’s consistent performance throughout the day reaffirmed his status as Bagnaia’s closest rival in the championship battle.

Bagnaia’s teammate at Ducati Lenovo Enea Bastianini also had a strong showing by securing third place with a time of 1:57.877. His performance underscored the competitiveness of the Ducati machines this season and provided valuable data for the team as they prepare for Saturday’s sprint race and Sunday’s grand prix.

Maverick Viñales continued to impress with his speed on the Aprilia RS-GP, finishing fourth in both sessions. Alex Marquez rounded out the top five with a solid performance for Gresini Racing, showcasing consistency that could play a crucial role in securing points over the weekend.

Fabio Quartararo managed to finish sixth overall after struggling earlier in practice but found better pace as he adapted to track conditions. Franco Morbidelli also showed promise by finishing seventh, while Alex Rins secured eighth place for Monster Energy Yamaha.

KTM’s Jack Miller and Marc Marquez (Gresini) completed the top 10, while Morbidelli’s final lap proved costly for Pedro Acosta as it knocked the Tech3 GASGAS rookie down to 11th. Johann Zarco led the Honda charge in 13th, while Brad Binder was 14th on his KTM after an early crash.

KTM rider Brad Binder once again had a disappointing outing for KTM, finishing 14th. The South African finished in an LCR Honda sandwich as the Japanese rider of Takaaki Nakagami finished in 15th place.

Trackhouse’s Raul Fernandez finished 16th, ahead of factory Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaro, who crashed twice at Turn 9 throughout the session.

Repsol Honda’s Luca Marini finished in 18th to close out his Friday. The Italian rider finished ahead of GasGas rider Augusto Fernandez, stand-in VR46 rider Andrea Iannone and his team-mate Joan Mir.

As practice for the 2024 Malaysian MotoGP concluded, it became evident that tire management would be critical for success. Bagnaia emphasized this aspect during interviews, noting how vital it was to complete nearly race distance on used tires during practice sessions.

The stakes are particularly high this weekend as Martin leads Bagnaia by 17 points in the championship standings. With only two races remaining in the season following Malaysia, every point counts significantly towards their respective title hopes.

The atmosphere in Sepang is charged with anticipation as fans eagerly await what promises to be an exhilarating sprint race on Saturday followed by the main event on Sunday.
