Will Power claims victory at Iowa Speedway amid chaotic final lap crash

Will Power won Sunday’s Hy-Vee One Step 250, securing his first win at the Iowa Speedway and his first triumph on an oval track since 2019.

On Sunday, Will Power led Team Penske to success the Iowa Speedway after clinching his first IndyCar Series race victory at the 0.875-mile oval, amid a four-car crash on the final lap.

Following a disappointing 18th-place finish in the Iowa-Vee Homefront 250 on Saturday, the two-time IndyCar champion more than redeemed himself on Sunday by outpacing Alex Palou and Scott McLaughlin after completing 250 action-packed laps starting in 22nd place.

The race on Sunday unfolded during daytime hours instead of evening, slightly reducing speeds but failing to significantly enhance drivers’ ability to compete side by side.

The 43-year-old driver charged from the 22nd starting spot and quickly received top-notch service from his No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet team to outperform series leader Alex Palou during the final pit stops under green-flag conditions.

In that pivotal moment, Power held a time advantage of approximately nine-tenths of a second over Palou, as indicated by data compiled by NTT Data. The margin between them at the finish line was a mere .3915 of a second.

Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske, who claimed victory in Saturday night’s Hy-Vee Homefront 250 presented by Instacart, finished third. He led for the initial 94 laps of Sunday’s race, raising his total consecutive laps led over two nights to an impressive 259.

McLaughlin relinquished his lead during Sunday’s event when a caution arose on Lap 101 due to Agustin Canapino’s stalled car in Turn 2. With Palou making a pit stop and Power yet to complete his scheduled stop, these two drivers surged ahead, pushing McLaughlin back into third place.

Power trailed Palou for 104 of the following 114 laps before ultimately passing him during the second pit stop – a move that proved pivotal in deciding the race’s outcome amidst sunny and hot conditions in the Midwest.

Dixon secured fourth place driving for No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing, with Colton Herta finishing fifth behind the wheel of No. 26 Gainbridge Honda operated by Andretti Global w/Curb-Agajanian.

As Power crossed the finish line, Sting Ray Robb’s car flipped after making contact with Alexander Rossi coming out of turn two. The car skidded upside down along the backstretch while Rossi’s vehicle collided with Kyle Kirkwood’s and Ed Carpenter’s cars – ultimately landing Carpenter’s car on top of Kirkwood’s.
Rossi, Kirkwood, and Carpenter all managed to safely exit their damaged cars.

Robb made a thumbs-up gesture as he was transported via stretcher to an ambulance before being airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines for further evaluation. However, IndyCar Series officials confirmed he was in stable condition.
