Dutch MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia dominates Friday Practice breaking lap record

Francesco Bagnaia dominated Friday’s practice for Dutch MotoGP at Assen as the reigning world champion came in 0.065 seconds ahead of Maverick Vinales on the second session.

Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia skillfully executed perfection during the second practice for Dutch MotoGP, breaking the Assen lap record with a laptime of 1.31.340s ahead of second-placed Maverick Vinales, who improved his lap time in the final moments.

The Aprilia rider crashed in the final sector after losing control of his bike on his flying lap at the final chicane with two minutes to go, which pretty much prevented anyone from improving in the final stages due to yellow flags.

Gresini Ducati duo Alex and Marc Marquez took third and sixth, with Aleix Espargaro and Jorge Martin wedged in between in fourth and fifth respectively. Meanwhile, Brad Binder delivered his fastest lap to secure seventh place, marking the only KTM rider to qualify for Saturday’s Q2.

Enea Bastianini’s prospects of making it to Q1 seemed to be much stronger despite a late crash. However, he was lucky to finish eighth due to Espargaro’s crash. Raul Fernandez and Franco Morbidelli finished in ninth and tenth place, respectively, rounding out the Q2 qualifying slots.

Despite Yamaha’s engine upgrades, none of the two riders was able to secure a spot in Q2 as Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins finished 11th and 14th, respectively. VR46 Ducati’s Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannatonio finished in 12th and 13th place, split by only 0.005s.

Pedro Acosta was unable to make any improvements on his lap time and finished a dismal 15th due to the yellow flags that were triggered after Espargaro’s crash in the final moments. Trackhouse Aprilia’s Miguel Oliveria came in 16th, ahead of the leading Honda rider Johann Zarco.

KTM’s Jack Miller finished in a disappointing 18th place, 1.766 seconds off the benchmark with LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami following in 19th. Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori finished 20th although his final lap time overcame Augusto Fernandez and Repsol Honda duo Joan Mir and Luca Marini.
