Mick Schumacher has become the subject of speculation after he was reported to be the front-runner for a seat in the IndyCar Series for 2025.
This comes as Mick Schumacher’s window to join the F1 2025 grid appears to be narrowing, but the Mercedes reserve driver has been linked to a move to IndyCar next year.
Following his Formula 2 championship win, Schumacher joined F1 racing for Haas for two seasons, however, at the conclusion of 2022 the team dropped the 25-year old in favour of veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg.
As part of his 2024 racing plan, Schumacher has explored outside of Formula 1, juggling his reserve role with World Endurance Championship responsibilities as a member of the Alpine team. However, he is currently linked to a new project in the US.
The Italian team with which Schumacher won the F2 championship, Prema Racing, has declared that it will enter the IndyCar series in 2025 and rumors are currently circulating that the two will reunite in 2025.
According to Auto Hebdo’s pundit Gonzalo Forbes, he claimed that Schumacher could potentially join Prema’s IndyCar squad which confirmed that it is looking for a European driver to round out their lineup.
“He has never hidden his ambition to return to single-seaters,” Gonzalo Forbes reported.
“The German could unite with the [team boss Rene] Rosin clan again for a possible return to service in IndyCar in 2025.”
Although Schumacher still has aspirations of racing in F1, his former Haas team boss Guenther Steiner believes that if the German driver does not secure a seat for 2025, his prospects of making a return are probably gone.
“If it doesn’t work out next year, it will probably never work out again,” he told German publication BILD. “He has to perform well in the WEC this season – then it can be a stepping stone.
“If he doesn’t race in Formula 1 next year, it will be three years without a cockpit. Sure, he was there for two years and is part of the new generation – but what use is that then? It would be extremely difficult if he was completely out for three years.”
Mercedes does have a spot available in the F1 2025 championship, with Lewis Hamilton switching to Ferrari although Schumacher hasn’t been mentioned among contenders like Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
