Aston Martin unveiled its brand-new 2024 F1 contender, the AMR24, at a special launch event held at their Silverstone facility.
Aston Martin unveiled the new AMR24 with a brief launch event this morning as the team hopes to have a strong foundation for development in 2024 F1 after facing some challenges improving their car during the 2023 season.
Marking the sixth team to reveal the new car and livery, Aston Martin unveiled the all-new AMR24 kicking off the second wave of F1 2024 car launches at their headquarters in what has turned out to be a trilogy of reveals.
Aston Martin also unveiled the new Vantage road car and Vantage GT3 along with the AMR24 launch. However, all eyes were on the 2024 F1 car, which the team hopes to compete for more podiums and maybe victory this season.
According to preliminary observations, Aston will remain with its existing livery this year—the stunning British Racing Green. Although there is a good amount of exposed carbon fiber visible all over the car, the livery is not as lacking as that featured on other cars that have already been launched for this year.
“We are proud to debut the AMR24,” said Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack. “It is the result of a huge effort by the whole team at our new AMR Technology Campus and it will allow the team to take another step forward in 2024.
“Since the last race in 2023, everyone has been hyper-focused on improvements in every area, concentrating our efforts on what really makes a difference, what really matters to be better.
“Almost every area of the car has been refined and improved, building on our strengths, and taking on board the lessons of the previous campaign.
“2023 was our best season to date and our goal this season is to score regular points, podiums, and fight for our first win in green.”
Similar to other launches, Aston Martin only unveiled a rendering of their latest creation as quite possibly some components are still in the design stage and the teams prefer keeping their new cars a secret.
However, the rear suspension which the team “borrowed” from Mercedes is one notable modification, as the team maintained its use of the gearbox, hydraulics and rear suspension from Mercedes’s mystery 2024 challenger.
One of the changes is the transition from a pull rod to a push rod arrangement. The modification necessitates moving the suspension actuating parts higher up in the back of the car in order to reduce space at the bottom. For optimal performance, there should be a clean passage for air to flow from over the sidepods down onto the diffuser.
The Aston Martin AMR23 from the previous year was among the fastest designs on the grid right out of the gates, but once the development process began, it lost momentum. It wasn’t until the conclusion of the year that Aston Martin managed to return to its initial specifications.
“We want a race car that is more of an all-rounder,” technical director Fallows explained. “We believe the AMR24 provides the ideal platform for in-season development and a sustained season-long challenge.
“We’ve inherited new suspension from Mercedes, they give us the gearbox and the structure of the rear suspension. That has changed slightly from last year as well. So there’s a change on the rear, but the front is very similar.
“The front suspension layout is a similar layout to what we had on the AMR23, still a pushrod.”
Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso will be driving the Aston Martins, like they did in 2023. At the time of its announcement, Aston Martin’s executive chairman Lawrence Stroll discussed the benefits that the AMR F1 squad and the company’s road cars will share.
“Today’s celebration of high performance also highlights the burgeoning relationship between our road and race programs, with Aston Martin Lagonda now benefitting from the exceptional pool of engineering talent, experience and knowledge forged in Formula One and harvested through Aston Martin Performance Technologies,” Lawrence Stroll said.
The AMR24 will hit the track for the first time later on Monday in a Silverstone shakedown.
