Philipp Oettl signs with GMT94 Yamaha for 2024 WorldSBK

Philipp Oettl will be able to keep racing in the WorldSBK Championship after signing a deal to join GMT94 Yamaha for the 2024 season.

Having parted ways with Team Go Eleven, Philip Oettl joined GMT94 Yamaha after the satellite Ducati team signed Andrea Iannone to replace the former Moto2/3 racer.

After moving up from the WorldSSP Championship in 2022, Oettl became a consistent top ten contender for the next two seasons, achieving his highest ranking at the 2023 season opener at Phillip Island with a fifth-place finish.

Oettl is eager to get his hands on his new Yamaha R1, which he will be taking over from Lorenzo Baldassarri.

“I am very happy to join GMT94 for the 2024 season,” Oettl said of his new signing. “Christophe and his team have been working at a very high level for decades and I am honoured to be able to join the team.

“During the last events of the 2023 season, I took a step forward and I would like to continue it next year too.

“Of course, it’s a difficult goal, but I will prepare well during the winter holidays to be ready for the first tests.

“I can’t wait to meet the team and start working.”

While GMT94 had a challenging first WorldSBK season, having finished first in both WorldSSP and the Endurance World Championship, team manager Christophe Guyot is optimistic about the progress his new German rider will make.

“Grand Prix winner in Moto3™ with a total of three podiums in the category, Philipp Oettl made his debut in the WorldSSP in 2020,” Guyot said.

“After achieving 11 podiums, he reached WorldSBK in 2022. In 2023, he demonstrated his speed finishing fifth in Australia and six times in the top seven.

“We hope to finish in the top 10 next season, we will help Philipp achieve his goals as a rider.”

With Oettl joining the fold, Yamaha now holds five of the six available seats as the Motoxracing team has not yet announced their plans.
