William Byron banned from Brickyard qualifying for failing inspection

Hendrick Motorsports William Byron will have to start from the back of the grid in the Brickyard 200 on Sunday after failing the pre-race inspection three times on Friday.

William Byron’s car failed the pre-race inspection three times; therefore, he will not be able to qualify on Saturday afternoon at the Indianapolis road course.

The No. 24 Axalta Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was inspected four times before passing on the final attempt. The inspection fails came as a result of tolerance problems that were discovered on the right front fender during inspection.

Byron’s crew chief was also suspended for the remaining part of the weekend and after Sunday’s race start, Byron is required to serve a pass-through penalty. Additionally, the team cannot select its pit stall on the race day.

“Unfortunately, after passing on the fourth attempt, the @Hendrick24Team will lose a crew member, as well as there will be no attempt to qualify and a pass through under green for this weekend’s race at @IMS,” Hendrick Motorsports posted on social media.

Byron will be allowed to take part in Saturday’s morning practice.

Byron is in the lead in the series going into Indianapolis with four victories. With three races remaining in the regular season, the 25-year-old is third in the standings and has won more races this season than any other Cup driver.

The Hendricks Motorsports driver has received penalties for failing inspection before. In September of last year, he also failed three inspections at Talladega.
