Alfa Romeo to remain in F1 with possible links to Haas

Alfa Romeo will continue participating in Formula 1 despite the announcement of their partnership with Sauber ending at the end of this season.

According to Motorsport.it, Alfa Romeo is expected to form a partnership with Haas starting in 2024, which will result in the American team’s Ferrari engines being rebranded with the Alfa Romeo brand.

It is anticipated that Alfa Romeo and Haas will officially announce their new alliance during the Italian Grand Prix, which will take place on the first weekend in September.

Alfa Romeo will end its partnership with Sauber following five seasons with the Hinwil-based team, as Sauber continues to get ready for Audi’s takeover in 2026 as previously reported by Racetrackmasters.com in May. Despite their impending exit from Sauber, Alfa Romeo has always been eager to stay in Formula One, as the company’s CEO indicated back in February.

Audi will hold a 75% stake by 2026 in Sauber’s F1 operations with the German automaker’s powertrains expected to power their F1 cars.

At the beginning of the year, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told Racetrackmasters.com that the brand wants to be a part of Formula One’s future, in which they would be after merging with Haas.

Such a partnership has previously existed; most recently, from 2016 to 2018, Red Bull marketed its engines as “TAG Heuer” despite the fact that they were Renault units.

Alfa Romeo returned to Formula One in 2018 as the Sauber team’s title sponsor before the team underwent a full transformation in 2019. However, the team has experienced scoring difficulties ever since teaming with Sauber in 2019.

Their best year was actually their first one together, as they placed eighth in the Constructors’ Championship with 57 points in 2019. That season, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi served as the team’s drivers; they remained with the squad in 2020 and 2021.

The team only managed to score eight points in 2020, but 13 points in 2021.

Currently with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, the team scored 55 points in the first game under the new aerodynamic regulations, which was a substantial improvement over the previous campaign.

Despite the fact that this was still two points below their maximum total from 2019, the team finished sixth in the 2022 Constructors’ Championship.

In the Constructors’ Championship, Haas and Alfa Romeo are now at the bottom of the rankings, with the former leading by two points in eighth place.
