The commentary for this weekend’s doubleheader in Jakarta will sound significantly different after Jack Nicholls was sacked as the lead Formula E commentator.
Jack Nicholls has been a crucial member of the Formula E broadcasting crew since the sport’s inaugural race in Beijing in 2014. Ben Edwards, a seasoned broadcaster, will take Nicholls’ place in Jakarta.
An independent inquiry of the commentator, who, according to The Times, was the subject of three allegations of “inappropriate behavior,” for which he has subsequently been found guilty, led to his dismissal.
Two of the allegations allegedly came from witnesses, and one allegedly came from a younger employee with whom he was purportedly dating.
The commentator’s contract “was terminated” by the all-electric series, a Formula E representative confirmed ahead of the Jakarta race.
“Formula E can confirm that an investigation was carried out in response to complaints of inappropriate behaviour received about Jack Nicholls,” said a Formula E spokesperson.
“Following this investigation, Jack Nicholls’s contract to provide race commentary was terminated.”
Nicholls has “sincerely” apologized to individuals who were affected and has also “fully accepted responsibility” in his own statement.
“Although disappointed with the decision, I respect it and accept why it was taken,” Nicholls said. “I want to take full responsibility for what I did and apologise unreservedly for a couple of isolated incidents that has made those concerned feel uncomfortable.
“I never meant any harm and I am committed to making amends and to be more mindful of my behaviour in future.”
Nicholls not only oversees commentary for Formula E, but he also provides the voice for BBC Radio 5 Live’s Formula 1 coverage. However, IMG in Stockley Park is the source of this coverage and they are yet to confirm whether Nicholls will retain in his role.
It is unknown if he will be commentating this weekend when Formula One heads to Spain for the Spanish Grand Prix; last weekend, he opted out for the Monaco Grand Prix.
An executive in the world of sports admitted that the entire issue has put the BBC in a tough position.
“It puts the BBC in a bit of a conundrum,” one sports executive told the Times. “This guy has been shown the door by Formula E yet remains on air on its Formula 1 coverage.”
