Hamilton has no plans to retire, may extend Mercedes deal past 2023

Lewis Hamilton stated that he does not intend to leave Formula One and gave the impression that he might extend his current Mercedes contract past the end of the 2023 season.

Any claims that the difficult season had lessened his desire to pursue an outright record eighth drivers’ title were refuted by the seven-time world champion.

“For years, we have been going up and down with stories of retirement and stopping… I feel healthier than I have ever felt,” the British driver said. “I love what I am doing and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.”

“My goal is always to be with Mercedes. I feel like we’re embarking on a lot of really positive things, not only in the sport but outside, and I think there’s a lot to accomplish together. I want to be a part of that.”

This weekend’s Italian Grand Prix will be difficult for Hamilton because he will start from the rear of the field due to an engine change that caused him to exceed the season’s allowed components limit. With Max Verstappen once again the favorite to win, it makes achieving the season’s first victory despite recent close calls, extremely unlikely.

The opportunities for Hamilton to win his first race of 2022 are dwindling, and he needs to win soon in order to keep his record as the only F1 driver in history to have won a race every year he has participated in the sport.

“I don’t care about records, but I am focused on getting that win,” the 37-year old said. “I am grateful that each year since 2007, we have had an opportunity to win.”

“I do believe we will have a chance this year. We still have seven races to go and it is definitely a big goal to get back to the front.”

“I have no idea where our car is going to be great. It was a surprise when I got into the car last weekend. For me, it’s about winning another world championship.”
