Grosjean completes first test with indycar, experiences a spin

Romain Grosjean completed his first ever IndyCar test session at Barber Motorsports Park, recovering from a spin in the morning to get in a full day of practice in his new car. The session marks the first time the French racing driver has been back behind the wheel of any race car since suffering a horrific crash at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix on November 29, 2020. Since then, he has found a new series to call his own, and will be racing the #51 Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing entry for the street and road course events on the 2021 IndyCar season. After putting in a few laps in the morning, Grosjean had a high-speed spin while entering turn 1.  His unsponsored black car had to be towed back to the pits after subsequently getting stuck in the gravel. Despite the setback, he was back on track an hour later and ended up completing 83 laps by the end of the day, and was very close to the competitive times laid down by the series regulars who were also in attendance. “It felt very normal,” said Grosjean after the full day of testing.  “It really felt like home at the beginning.  It’s a different car, a different [driving] position, but apart from that, everything felt great and normal. “Basically I just went too fast [into turn 1].  When I was on the brake I also picked up the throttle which you do in high speed, but because it’s a mechanical diff it does open the diff when you do that, and therefore it makes the car loose. “I just need to get used to a new car.  It reminds me of when I was jumping from Formula Renault to Formula 3 and GP2.  So far, I’ve been really happy with it. “I think the more testing we have, the better it is, but I’m also very much looking forward for it to be the 17th and 18th of April to go racing.” Grosjean was wearing a version of the helmet that was designed by his three kids and was intended to be worn during his final Formula 1 race at the end of the 2020 season. The lingering effects of his crash in Bahrain, however, meant that he was forced to end his time in the sport two races early and never had a chance to wear the helmet as part of a proper send-off. He still carries the marks of his accident on his hands, which show heavy scarring and are still a little sore during the rigors of piloting a 700 horsepower machine with no power steering. “It’s definitely the hardest steering wheel I’ve had to cope with,” explained Grosjean. “The first few laps, the muscles weren’t quite warmed up or ready for it. I’ll know where to exactly where to work in the gym and what to do. “There’s a nice big blister on my left thumb which is not pretty, but driving-wise it was okay. It wasn’t painful. I was being a bit careful on some of the curves, but generally it hasn’t been a limitation. “I think really what I’ve found here is that there’s a lot of mechanical grip and less aero than the Formula 1 car and obviously a little bit less power, but that the drivability of the engine, the modes of the engine, the different maps we tried worked really well. “The mechanical grip of the car has been really good. The way the team works is really good. It’s different, but I’m happy with that. Trying to adapt myself has been quite smooth.” Grosjean was far from the only driver at this test. In total 12 drivers from five teams put in laps on the 2.38-mile course in Birmingham, Alabama to prepare themselves for the start of the new season. Team Penske, Ed Carpenter Racing, AJ Foyt Racing, Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser Sullivan, and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing were all present to put some of the finishing touches on their preparations for the new season. Timing from the event is not available as this was a private test session that was not attended by media outlets. Grosjean has one more test scheduled at Laguna Seca, but then will return to Barber in just under two months’ time for IndyCar’s first race of the season on April 18.

Red Bull reveals their 2021 F1 car, the RB16B

Red Bull has unveiled its 2021 car ahead of the new Formula 1 season, releasing the first images of the RB16B. The Milton Keynes-based team finished runner-up to runaway champions Mercedes in 2020, claiming two victories over the 17-race campaign. Ambitions are high for this year having ended 2020 on a high with a win at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as Red Bull goes in search of its first world title since 2013. The RB16B is an evolution of its predecessor, carrying over 60% of the 2020 car, with Red Bull confident it has rectified the unpredictable nature of the car that plagued it in the early races of last season. Engine supplier Honda has already announced it will be leaving F1 at the end of 2021, but has developed an entirely new power unit for this year in a bid to help Red Bull contend for the world championship. Red Bull recently confirmed it will continue to use Honda engines from 2022 following the unanimous agreement to introduce a freeze on engine development. It will take over the project and run the power units in its own name, also revealing a powertrain facility will be run from its factory in Milton Keynes. The team has a newly-formed driver line-up, consisting of two race-winning drivers for the first time since 2018. 10-time grand prix winner Max Verstappen eyes a title challenge in 2021 having finished a distant third in the drivers’ standings behind both Mercedes drivers. 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix victor Sergio Perez becomes the first driver outside the Red Bull fold to race for the Austrian marque since 2007, replacing the demoted Alexander Albon after a stellar 2020 campaign for Racing Point.

Gresini MotoGP team boss Fausto Gresini passes away after a long battle with COVID-19

Double 125cc world champion and veteran MotoGP team boss Fausto Gresini has died at the age of 60 in hospital in Italy after a two-month battle with COVID-19. The Italian was taken ill with the virus just before Christmas and was hospitalised on 27 December in Imola. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to a specialist COVID care ward in Bologna, where he remained up to his death. Having initially been put into a coma and onto assisted breathing, Gresini showed signs of improvement in January and was brought out of his coma. But in recent weeks doctors had to put him back into a coma as he battled pneumonia caused by the virus. The Gresini team confirmed on Tuesday morning that the Italian had passed away. “The news we would have never wanted to give, and that unfortunately we are forced to share with all of you,” the statement read. “After nearly two months battling against Covid, Fausto Gresini has sadly passed away, few days after turning 60. “All of Gresini Racing are close to Fausto’s family in support: his wife Nadia and the four children Lorenzo, Luca, Alice and Agnese… as well as everyone who had the chance to get to know him and love him throughout the years.” Gresini raced in the 125cc world championship from 1983 to 1994, winning the title in 1985 and 1987 on Garelli machinery. During his racing career, on top of his two world titles, Gresini 21 races and tallied up an impressive 47 podium finishes. Upon his retirement from racing, Gresini founded the grand prix team which bears his name in 1997 and fielded Alex Barros on a Honda – with the Brazilian scoring a podium at Donington Park. Gresini’s team would win the 250cc riders’ title in 2001 with Japanese star Daijiro Kato, promoting him to MotoGP the following year where he scored two podiums. In an emotional 2003 season following Kato’s death in a crash during the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Sete Gibernau would win four times for Gresini on his way to runner-up in the standings. Gibernau repeated the feat in 2004, with Marco Melandri taking his Gresini Honda to runner-up in the standings in 2005. Gresini’s final MotoGP victory came at Estoril in 2006, when Toni Elia pipped Valentino Rossi by 0.002s in a thrilling encounter. In 2010, Elias took his Gresini machine to the very first Moto2 world title, with Gresini Racing winning a third world title in 2018 in Moto3 with Jorge Martin. Gresini parted ways with Honda for 2015, becoming Aprilia’s official factory entrant. In early December Gresini confirmed it would return to being a standalone team again in MotoGP from 2022.

Gresini Racing claims rumours of their boss Fausto Gresini passing are false

Gresini Racing has moved to reassure MotoGP fans that COVID-infected team owner Fausto Gresini has not died, contrary to reporting from Italy. A report had emerged in recent hours that the two-time 125cc world champion, who has been hospitalised since December, had finally succumbed to the coronavirus. Gresini Racing tweeted a short time ago, however, “Despite the news currently circulating, Fausto is still with us, albeit in extremely critical conditions.” The condition of Gresini, who has turned 60 during his hospital stay, was said last week to have deteriorated to ‘critical’ by Dr Nicola Cilloni.

Estrella Galicia moves to Ferrari with Sainz as team sponsors

Ferrari and Estrella Galicia have announced a partnership ahead of the 2021 season getting underway, with the Spanish beer brand agreeing a sponsorship deal with the Scuderia following Carlos Sainz’s move to the Maranello-based team. The Spanish beer brand previously sponsored McLaren when Sainz was one of their drivers. Under this new agreement, the branding of Estrella Galicia’s non-alcoholic beer, Estrella Galicia 0,0, will be displayed on Ferrari’s 2021 car and its drivers’ overalls. Estrella Galicia 0,0 will also become the “official beer” of the Ferrari F1 Team. “We are pleased to embark on this new partnership with Estrella Galicia 0,0 an emerging brand in the global beer sector,” Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said in a statement on Monday. “We share many values with the Spanish company, such as the pursuit of excellence, respect for tradition and ties to our geographic roots and the craftsmanship of our product. “Furthermore, Estrella Galicia 0,0 has been present in motor sport for many years, paying particular attention to talented youngsters, which is something else we have in common,” he added. Meanwhile, Ignacio Rivera, CEO of Corporación Hijos de Rivera – which owns the Estrella Galicia beer brand – hailed their new partnership with Formula One’s most successful team. “We are pleased to become a team partner of Scuderia Ferrari, the most successful team with the biggest following in F1,” he said. “Our association is based on shared values such as passion, search for excellence and our artisan tradition. “I am sure that with these ingredients, we will enjoy great moments together that will help get our message across to beer lovers around the world.”

Mercedes teases with W12 livery

Mercedes has been warming up fans on social media over the past few days for the unveiling of their new F1 car. They will present it in just over a week on Tuesday 2 March. On Monday 22 February they gave a sneak preview on Twitter. Actual technical changes cannot be seen on this ‘teaser’, but one thing is clear and that is that Mercedes will keep its word. Last year there was doubt in the media whether Mercedes would start with a black livery in 2021 or whether they would go back to the traditional silver. Mercedes said then that they intend to continue their campaign against racism with the black livery. It must be a very strange colour palette if the car is not predominantly black. Prominently present is the red star. Mercedes has already indicated that in honour of the deceased Niki Lauda it will always be there, but it is more prominent than last year, as can be seen just behind the head of the driver. The red of main sponsor INEOS also returns on the airbox. On the photo it seems to be a slightly brighter shade of red than last year and it also continues downwards. Given the larger share that INEOS now has in the team, it would not be surprising that the red colour is more prominent this year.

Alfa Romeo unveils their 2021 F1 car, the C41

A ceremony in the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Poland, saw the attendance of a limited number of senior personnel from the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Formula One team – with media, fans and employees being invited to watch virtually in respect of the local COVID-19 regulations. Team drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi and reserve driver Robert Kubica entered the stage as the C41, in a striking new livery, was shown for the first time. Featuring a new color scheme designed by Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile and featuring the now traditional red and white colors of the team, the car, designed under the coordination of Technical Director Jan Monchaux, represents an evolution of the C39 that competed in the 2020 season. Owing to the restrictions imposed by the regulations, the car carries over many of the components of its predecessor, while still standing out with its renewed appearance, in particular in regard to the nosecone, an area on which the team chose to focus its development tokens. Under the bodywork lies a new Ferrari engine, ready to rev in less than a week when the team embarks on a new season with the C41’s shakedown in Barcelona on Friday. The Alfa Romeo logo is flanked by the Quadrifoglio (four-leaf clover) traditionally associated with Alfa Romeo’s racing efforts, and the logo of Autodelta, the brand’s legendary racing team. These logos adorn the bodywork, contributing to the creation of one of the standout cars on the grid – a classic design that embodies the passion and tradition of the marques it represents. Alfa Romeo once again partners with Sauber Motorsport for the 2021 Formula One World Championship. The partnership between two of the most recognized brands in motorsport started in 2018, when Alfa Romeo joined the team as title sponsor. In the three years of operative collaboration so far, the team has achieved important results. True to its long-lasting spirit of competitiveness, Alfa Romeo takes on the challenge once more. Alfa Romeo and Sauber Group partnership extends beyond racing. The collaboration, both technical and commercial, allows Sauber Engineering’s technical expertise to be transferred to Alfa Romeo road car production. In particular, the Giulia GTA project benefits from this long-standing partnership, leveraging the technical know-how of Sauber AG Engineering and Aerodynamics divisions. Alfa Romeo entrusted Sauber Engineering with the production of most of the carbon components in the GTA and GTAm, especially those with aerodynamic impact.

Watch Alfa Romeo launch the 2021 C41 live

Alfa Romeo presents its new car for 2021 on Monday. The C41 is the successor to the C39, which means that the Italian team skips a number. The Italian team has already released some information about the car. Alfa Romeo did not have a particularly strong year in 2020. The Italians only managed eight points and finished eighth in the Constructors’ Championship. This will have to improve in 2021, but with the regulations remaining almost the same it remains to be seen how big a step Alfa Romeo can take.

Russell and Ocon will be running to succeed Hamilton or Bottas in 2022

Toto Wolff has named two drivers who may be in the running to succeed either Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas in 2022. At the same time, the Mercedes team boss played down the fact that seven time world champion Hamilton has only signed a less-than-one-year contract extension for this season. “The reason was simply a lack of time,” Wolff told Speed Week. “We only started negotiating just before Christmas. “A multi-year contract is more complex than one for one season, so we said we’ll sign this for a year and see about it later. Everything is currently open on both sides after 2021,” Wolff added. He named two Mercedes-linked drivers who are currently loaned to rival teams as potential candidates for 2022. “Esteban (Ocon) is in the second year of a two-year contract with Renault and Alpine F1, and George (Russell) is with Williams this year,” said Wolff. “So we have some options for 2022, but until then our full support goes to Valtteri and Lewis. We will evaluate in the middle of the year whether there will be a change in 2022. “It is definitely too early now to talk about scenarios for 2022.”

Grosjean talks of the pain he still feels after Bahrain accident

Romain Grosjean, who saw his F1 career end in a fireball, can’t wait to get back into racing. Next season he will do so in the IndyCar for Dale Coyne Racing. However, he is still not fully recovered from the injuries sustained in his accident in Bahrain. “When I wake up in the morning, it is not easy to move my hands,” he says in conversation with SRF. “I move my fingers 3,000 times a day because that’s the only way I get full movement back. It feels terrible when I try to move my fingers.” He is able to function fully in a race car, but for the time being he will have to endure the pain. This is mainly because he recently came off the painkillers. “I had enough, I didn’t want to take it anymore. To not be dependent on the medication anymore, that was a big psychological step for me.” Grosjean also says he has an increasingly extensive memory of the accident. Two weeks after the accident he suddenly heard the sound of the fire again and recently he also had the smell of burning carbon fibre in his nose again. In the first place it is important to know what is going on in your life and what is going on in your head. Some memories he had even repressed completely. “I had told everyone that there was no fire in the cockpit. Then I saw the images from the on-board camera, which have not yet been made public. The fire is everywhere. Just everywhere.”

Christopher Bell gets his first win at Daytona

Reigning series champion Chase Elliott had won the past four points-paying NASCAR Cup Series races on road courses. His runner-up finish in the Daytona 500 put him on pole for today’s race, and his ultra-fast car had him in the lead for the vast majority of the early running. With 15 laps remaining, however, spotters reported light rain over the track. There was no real threat of a deluge, but NASCAR still chose to enact their procedure for rain in road course races, calling a caution for teams to be given the option to put on wet tires. This was to be the final stop of the race, and every team in the field chose to keep their dry tires. Elliott’s crew struggled, and he fell out of the top ten before the restart that followed. No more rain came, and nobody ever changed to wet tires. The yellow proved completely unnecessary. Elliott was run off track on the restart that followed, but an incredible save kept his race alive. Damage to the No. 8 Chevrolet of Tyler Reddick brought out another yellow, and Elliott was already back in the top ten after that restart. He drove all the way up to the top five with only five laps to go. Then, things got even worse. Elliott was making an attempt to bump the No. 2 of Brad Keselowski when he was hit from behind by Denny Hamlin, sending him spinning and ending his hopes of a fifth consecutive road course win. His teammate, Kyle Larson, had previously crashed in an attempt to pass within the top five, leaving Joey Logano comfortably leading Kurt Busch and Christopher Bell. Bell moved past Busch, and Logano’s massive lead began to shrink. With two to go, it had become clear that his No. 22 Penske Racing Ford was struggling with a brake issue. Bell caught him on the oval portion of the track, made some light contact, and easily moved past him under braking heading into a chicane. He missed turn 1 on the next lap, but a quick recovery and Logano’s struggles with his own car kept him in front, securing Bell his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series win in what is just his second race with the lead Joe Gibbs Racing team. Logano, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, and Brad Keselowski would complete the top five. Surprises in the top ten include AJ Allmendinger, running in a one-off ride for Kaulig Racing, and Daytona 500 winner Michael McDowell, a Front Row Motorsports driver who has recorded just 14 top tens in 358 career starts. McDowell is already effectively locked into the Playoffs postseason by virtue of his Daytona win, and he will now be joined by Bell. Chase Elliott, who led 44 laps in the 70-lap event, finished just 21st. NASCAR’s next race is just one week away. It will be run at Homestead, the first intermediate oval of the season and, after one pack race at Daytona’s big oval and one road course race in its infield, the first race that will reflect the majority of the season run this year. Lawrence Stroll continues to get more grip in Aston Martin F1 team control

Lawrence Stroll is solidifying his control of Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings as Kuwaiti investors reduce their interest in the auto manufacturer.Arabian News reports that the Canadian billionaire has solidified his control of Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings as Kuwaiti investors Adeem, once the largest shareholder, shrink their stake. The company confirmed in filings on Friday that the investment fund’s director Amr Ali Abdallah Abou El Seoud stepped down after the group’s shares in the automaker fell below seven percent. The report adds that this is the second reshuffle at Aston; last month three board members stepped down to be replaced by five new directors allied to Stroll. Also, last year, out the door went CEO Andy Palmer and in came Tobias Moers, former boss of AMG that runs the motorsport division for Mercedes, including their prime asset: their immensely successful F1 team. What might have begun as a vanity project to ensure his son Lance Stroll has a shot in Formula 1, is now a motoring history-making enterprise. Apart from rescuing the beleaguered car brand, Stroll is set on making it relevant again by staking his reputation on the line while convincing industries heavy hitters to believe in his vision. Notably and smartly, Daimler is firmly on board. Stroll’s increased shareholding pours cold water on (malicious?) reports last month, claiming the Canadian was planning to bail-out of the venture he began when he saved Force India from Vijay Mallya’s self-destruct button.

Ty Gibbs wins Daytona Xfinity series in his debut

Ty Gibbs turned in a historic NASCAR Xfinity Series debut Saturday night, as the 18-year-old won in his first series start holding off reigning champion Austin Cindric on the Daytona International Speedway road course. Gibbs took the lead on a restart in double overtime and held off the field by a comfortable 1.726 seconds at the finish line, dropping to his knees to reflect after climbing out of his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota a car owned by his grandfather, NASCAR and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs. With his win in the Super Start Batteries 188 at Daytona Presented by O’Reilly, Gibbs becomes only the sixth driver to win in his first series start matching a feat achieved by NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt in 1982 and most recently, Kurt Busch, 15 years ago. Gibbs becomes the youngest driver to win a NASCAR Xfinity Series road course event. At 18 years, four months, 16 days, he breaks the record held by Cindric (20 years old). “I just cannot thank everybody right now, really this is like a dream come true for me, it’s just awesome,” said an emotional Gibbs, who turned his first ever laps in the car and made his first career pit stop Saturday evening. “I really didn’t think I had it there,” he said of the intense racing at the end. “I fought back and we won.” Gibbs teammates Daniel Hemric and Brandon Jones finished third and fourth, followed by Jeb Burton and another of the JGR family, Harrison Burton. Miguel Paludo, Brandon Brown, Justin Haley and Jeremy Clements rounded out the top 10. A victory for Cindric would have been his second in as many races in 2021 and he turned in an inspired drive back to the front to contend for the win. He and A.J. Allmendinger — another road course racing star — collided while running first and second heading to the Stage 1 checkered flag. Allmendinger’s car was badly damaged and he ran laps down the remainder of the race. Cindric’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford was damaged as well, but the team made repairs and Cindric went to work. He returned to the race after multiple pit stops in 33rd place, but still on the lead lap. His road racing skills and the team’s strategy calls ultimately put him in position to contend for the win. “Obviously I don’t want to be racing to a stage that aggressively, I’d love to see a replay and hopefully we can avoid something like that because obviously A.J. and I were going to be fighting for a win later,” Cindric said. “I hated having that much damage to our PPG Ford Mustang that early. Just seemed like he was trying to block there, don’t know if he knew I was there or not. Sucks it’s over with and we salvaged a good finish. Congratulations to Ty.” Gibbs’ grandfather, who owns the team, climbed down from the pit box and stood behind it to watch the final moments of the race. Ben Rhodes wins NASCAR Truck series race at Daytona

Ben Rhodes wrapped up a perfect pair of race outings at Daytona International Speedway, answering his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory on the oval last week with a dramatic win Friday night on the infield road course. It took three overtime starts to secure the victory over 2020 series champion Sheldon Creed, but Rhodes’ work in the No. 99 ThorSport Racing Toyota marked only the third time in series history a driver has opened the season with back-to-back wins. And it marked the 200th victory for Toyota in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Rhodes, 23, of Louisville, Ky., crossed the finish line .320-seconds ahead of Creed with the running order frozen, however, when a caution — one of 10 on the night came out with a half-lap remaining in overtime. John Hunter Nemechek, who won Stage 1 and led 14 laps on the night, finished third. Todd Gilliland, who started 31st, rallied to an impressive fourth-place finish and Riley Herbst rounded out the top five. Matt Crafton, Derek Kraus, Kaz Grala, Timmy Hill and Christian Eckes completed the top 10. Rookie Hailie Deegan was running in the top-10 until a spin on the final lap of overtime.
